Condition
Some customers may comment on no 3rd or 4th gear operation.
The automatic transaxles in these affected vehicles were built prior to November 1, 1999 (Julian Date 305). Refer to illustration above for transaxle identification information.
Cause
This condition may be caused by the molded seal portion of the direct clutch piston assembly delaminating from the steel housing. This condition eventually can cause the outer lip portion of the piston seal to cut or tear. A cut or torn direct clutch piston seal will cause the loss of both 3rd and 4th gears.
Correction
To correct this condition, use a Tech 2(R) while driving at least 32 km/h (20 mph) to command 3rd gear. If 3rd gear is not present when commanded with the Tech 2(R), proceed with an inspection of the direct clutch piston and seal assembly for the cause listed in this bulletin. If the direct clutch piston seal is cut or torn, replace it with new direct clutch piston and seal assembly that has been released to prevent this condition. Inspect and replace any other components that indicate possible wear, damage, or quality concerns.
For complete automatic transaxle procedures, refer to the 2000 L-Series Automatic Transaxle Service Manual.
