Valve Spring and Stem Seal Replacement (In-Vehicle)
- TOOLS REQUIRED
- J-43649 Valve Spring Compressor
- SA9127E Gauge Bar Kit
- SA9102E-A Valve Stem Removal Kit
- SA9102E Valve Stem Oil Seal Tool
REMOVAL
1. Remove spark plugs, cam cover and camshaft. (Refer to "Camshaft Replacement In-Vehicle Removal".)
2. Install service tool J-43649. Use four (4) cam cover bolts to mount the supports to cam cover threaded holes.
- Torque: 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.)
3. Install spark plug adapter from gauge bar kit SA9127E in the respective cylinder.
NOTICE: The engine's No. 1 cylinder piston must be at top dead center (TDC) when removing and installing camshafts or timing chain, gears and chain guides will be damaged when air pressure is put into cylinders to hold valves closed.
4. With piston at top dead center (TDC) pressurize each cylinder to 690 kPa (100 psi).
5. Position compressor assembly cover over valve spring to be removed and turn T-handle to compress spring.
6. Remove valve spring cap, retainers and release spring tension.
7. Remove cap and spring.
8. Remove valve stem seal using service tool SA9102E-A.
INSTALLATION
IMPORTANT: Before each valve stem seal is installed, oil the valve stem seal and guide. If a valve stem seal is removed, it must be discarded.
1. Inspect valve stem for scratches, scores, and scuffs. Spray valve stem and guide with clean lubricating oil to remove any debris that may be present on valve stem or top of guide.
NOTICE: If a valve stem is removed after it has been installed, it must be discarded. The valve stem lock groove will cut the seal's lip during removal. Use extreme care when installing valve retainers and do not damage valve stems.
2. Oil valve guide and valve stem. Install valve stem oil seal with service tool SA9102E.
3. Install valve spring and cap.
4. Compress valve spring and install retainers.
5. Install hydraulic lash adjusters in their correct locations.
6. Remove service tool J43649 and spark plug adapter. (Refer to "Camshaft Replacement In-Vehicle Installation".)
7. Refer to cylinder head assembly procedure for installation of camshafts, cam cover, spark plugs, and ignition coil.
