Steering Wheel
CAUTION:- SAFETY PRECAUTIONS MUST BE FOLLOWED WHEN HANDLING A DEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG). AFTER DEPLOYMENT, THE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) SURFACE MAY CONTAIN A SMALL AMOUNT OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, A BY-PRODUCT OF THE DEPLOYMENT REACTION, THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN AND EYES. MOST OF THE POWDER ON THE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) IS HARMLESS. AS A PRECAUTION, WEAR GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASSES WHEN HANDLING A DEPLOYED INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG), AND WASH YOUR HANDS WITH MILD SOAP AND WATER AFTERWARDS.
- WHEN CARRYING A LIVE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG), MAKE SURE THE BAG AND TRIM .COVER ARE POINTED AWAY FROM YOU. NEVER CARRY INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) BY THE WIRES OR CONNECTOR ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE MODULE. IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT, THE BAG WILL DEPLOY WITH MINIMAL CHANCE OF INJURY. WHEN PLACING A LIVE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) ON A BENCH OR OTHER SURFACE, ALWAYS FACE BAG AND TRIM COVER UP AWAY FROM THE SURFACE.
- NEVER REST A STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY ON THE STEERING WHEEL WITH THE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) FACE DOWN AND COLUMN VERTICAL. THIS IS NECESSARY SO THAT A FREE SPACE IS PROVIDED TO ALLOW THE INFLATOR MODULE (AIR BAG) TO EXPAND IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT OF ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT. OTHERWISE, PERSONAL INJURY COULD RESULT.
IMPORTANT: In the event deployment has occurred, inspect coil assembly wire and driver inflator module for any signs of scorching, melting or other damage due to excessive heat. If the coil or inflator module has been damaged, replace it.
Tools Required
- KM-210-C Steering Wheel Puller
REMOVAL
1. Disable the SIR System.
2. Turn steering wheel to 3 o'clock position.
3. Remove inflator module by inserting a stubby Hat blade screw driver into the triangle shaped hole in rear steering wheel shroud.
4. Turn screw driver to release spring fastener, while lifting up on corner of bag closest to that fastener.
5. Repeat for second fastener.
6. Turn steering wheel to 9 o'clock position.
7. Repeat steps 4 - 5 until all spring fasteners are released.
8. Disconnect inflator module harness and horn lead.
9. Remove inflator module.
10. Disconnect cruise control (if equipped) switch connection and disconnect harness from steering wheel.
11. Remove steering wheel attachment nut and discard.
12. Install Steering Wheel Puller (KM-210-C or equivalent).
13. Remove steering wheel while feeding the wiring through the wheel opening.
NOTE: Always align the front wheels to the straight-ahead position when installation or removing a coil assembly. If a coil is removed without the wheels in a straight-ahead position and steering wheel has not been moved, the same coil assembly can be reinstalled if coil hub has not been rotated.
NOTE: If yellow tab is not available, use tape to prevent SIR coil from rotating.
14. Insert yellow tab or use a piece of tape to prevent rotating the SIR Coil.
DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove screws from steering wheel shroud.
NOTE: Cruise control switches must be removed from the rear. Do not attempt to pry them out from front as damage to steering wheel may occur.
2. If vehicle is equipped with cruise control, push switches out from rear of steering wheel.
ASSEMBLY
1. If vehicle is equipped with cruise control, install switches by pushing them in place from the front of the wheel.
2. Install screws in steering wheel shroud.
INSTALLATION
1. Remove yellow tab or tape from SIR Coil assembly.
2. Route wiring through steering wheel and install steering wheel onto steering shaft noting orientation notch that locates steering wheel in correct position.
IMPORTANT: A new steering wheel attachment nut must be used.
3. Install new steering wheel attachment nut.
Torque: 40 N.m (30 ft-lbs)
4. Connect cruise control (if equipped) switch connectors and attach harness to wheel.
5. Connect inflator module wiring harness and install harness integral connector lock device.
6. Install inflator module into steering wheel. Be sure to seat all four attachment points.
7. Enable the SIR system.
