Front Door Glass Area - Wind Noise

Wind Whistle Noise at Driver and/or Passenger Front Door Glass
Area(s) From Outside Rear View Mirror(s) (Remove and Discard
Gasket Between Mirror Housing and Mirror Mounting Panel)

MODELS AFFECTED:

2000 Saturn L-Series Sedans and Wagons

CONDITION:

Some customers may comment of a wind whistle noise at driver and/or passenger front door glass area(s) when driving their vehicle at road speed. The noise may be louder with window down.

CAUSE:

This condition may be caused by the plastic gasket between outside rearview mirror housing and mirror mounting panel fluttering due to air flow around mirror.

CORRECTION:

Remove and discard gasket between mirror housing and mirror mounting panel.

Refer to procedure in this bulletin to diagnose and repair this condition.

PROCEDURE





1. Test drive vehicle with left and right windows lowered one at a time to duplicate and verify wind whistle concern.


2. Cover exposed seam between suspected mirror housing and mirror mounting panel at location (A) with masking tape and test drive vehicle.

^ If wind whistle noise is eliminated with masking tape installed, continue to step 3.

^ If wind whistle noise is not eliminated with masking tape installed, refer to "Windnoise Diagnosis and Repair" in the Windnoise/Waterleaks/Appearance section of the 2000 L-Series Body/Electrical Volume I Service Manual.





3. Remove mirror trim panel by pulling out at top.





4. Remove mirror attachment nuts and remove mirror from door structure.
Manual mirror shown. Power mirror similar.





5. Remove foam from back of mirror mounting panel.

6. Remove screws securing mirror housing to mirror mounting panel and separate components.





7. Remove plastic gasket at location (A) and discard.





8. Assemble mirror housing to mirror mounting panel and install screws.

Torque: 3 Nm (27 in-lbs)

9. Install foam to back of mirror mounting panel.





10. Install mirror and attachment nuts to door structure

Torque: 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)

Manual mirror shown. Power mirror similar.





11. Install mirror trim panel by positioning lower tabs behind door trim panel and snapping into place.

12. Test drive vehicle to verify repair.
