BULLETIN NO.: 00-T-04

ISSUE DATE: January. 2000

CATEGORY TYPE: Engine-02

CATEGORY: Cooling

CORPORATION NO.: 99-06-02-020

SUBJECT:
Service Wrench Telltale On With DTCs P0480/P0481 Set and/or 30A COOL FAN #1 Fuse Open (Repair Chafed Engine Cooling Fan Wire)

MODELS AFFECTED:
2000 Saturn L-Series vehicles

CONDITION

Some customers may comment of any of the following conditions:

^ Service Wrench telltale is On

^ Engine Coolant Temperature telltale is On

^ Coolant temperature gauge needle is in the red zone

^ 30A COOL FAN # 1 fuse located in under hood fuse block (UHFB) is open

CAUSE

Puller fan (driver side) wiring harness, which contains three wires, may chafe on aluminum upper radiator mount.

CORRECTION

Repair chafed engine cooling fan wire(s)

PROCEDURE

1. Inspect wiring to cooling fan 1 (puller fan, driver side) at location shown in diagram for damage.

^ If damage of wiring is evident continue to step 2.

^ If damage is not evident refer to appropriate DTC information or other diagnostic charts in the Engine/Emissions Controls section of the 2000 L-Series L61 or L81 Service Manual.

2. Disconnect negative battery cable.

3. Cut damaged wire(s) at location of chafe or pinch.

4. Remove insulation from both ends of cut wire. Recommended strip length is 9.5 mm (3/8 in.). Caution must be used when stripping wire to prevent cutting wire strands. Locate new splice a minimum of 40 mm (1.5 in.) from other splices.

IMPORTANT:
With wiring used in Saturn vehicles, it is recommended that approved Packard Crimp and Seal Splice Sleeves (or equivalent) be used.

5. Using Saturn approved crimp and seal splice sleeve (found in special tools kit SA9138Z), position stripped ends of wires in sleeve until wires hit stop.

6. Hand crimp splice sleeve using appropriate crimping tool. Gently tug on wires after crimping to ensure they are secure.

CAUTION:
DO NOT USE A MATCH OR OPEN FLAME TO APPLY HEAT TO SPLICE SLEEVE.

7. Apply heat using Ultratourch(R) or equivalent device, heating to 175° C (347° F) until glue flows around edges of sleeve.

8. Check repaired wire(s) continuity and verify proper repair.

9. Tape wiring harness with electrical tape to prevent the possibility of future chafing.

10. Check COOL FAN # 1 fuse located in UHFB to ensure it is not blown.

11. Connect negative battery cable.

Torque:
Negative Battery Cable Bolt: 17 N.m (13 ft-lbs)

12. Connect Scan tool to vehicle and turn ignition to RUN position.

13. Use Scan tool to perform "3 Speed Fan" operational test. (Refer to Tech 2 User Guide for proper scan tool navigation and setup.)

14. Confirm that both cooling fans operate at LOW, MED, and HIGH speeds while performing test.

^ If cooling fans operate at all three speeds during test, vehicle is repaired and no further diagnosis is necessary.

^ If either cooling fan DOES NOT operate at all three speeds during the test, refer to the Cooling System section of the appropriate L61 or L81 Engine Service Manual for further diagnostics.
