Rear Compartment Lid - High Closing Effort
BULLETIN NO: 00-T-31ISSUE DATE: May, 2000
CATEGORY TYPE: Body-07
CATEGORY: Rear End
CORPORATION NO: 00-08-66-002
SUBJECT:
Rear Compartment Lid High Closing Effort (Replace Rear Compartment Lid Weatherstrip and Adjust Latch/Striker as Necessary)
MODELS AFFECTED:
2000 Saturn L-Series Sedans built before and including VIN YY639400
CONDITION:
Some customers may comment the rear compartment lid is difficult to close.
CAUSE:
This condition may be caused by the weatherstrip material stiffness or rear compartment lid latch and/or striker adjustment.
CORRECTION:
Replace rear compartment lid weatherstrip (P/N 24431822) and adjust rear compartment lid latch and/or striker as necessary.
Refer to the procedure in this bulletin for weatherstrip replacement and rear compartment latch and/or striker adjustment.
PROCEDURE:
1. Remove rear compartment sill plate.
2. Remove old weatherstrip by pulling upward off of mounting flange.
3. With a clean cloth thoroughly remove any adhesive remaining on flange with KENT Industries Acrysol (P/N 60170) or equivalent.
4. Obtain replacement weatherstrip (P/N 24431822)
NOTICE:
Do not stretch the weatherstrip when performing the installation.
5. Feed the weatherstrip over the open rear compartment lid, and down to the mounting flange.
NOTICE:
By feeding the weatherstrip over the lid, it is not necessary to separate the weatherstrip at its seam. This will ensure the weatherstrip is placed properly on the mounting flange.
6. Center the seam on the weatherstrip with the striker on the lower mounting flange. Install the weatherstrip around the remainder of the opening.
7. Once the weatherstrip is installed, ensure it is completely seated on the flange. Gently tap the weatherstrip onto the flange with a rubber mallet around the entire opening.
8. Verify compartment lid closing effort by operating the lid, closing as normal.
IMPORTANT:
The following steps have been included in the event the weatherstrip replacement alone does not completely cure the high effort closing condition. It is important to check closing effort after each step and proceed only as far as necessary to achieve proper closing effort.
9. Ensure the rear compartment lid down travel bumpers are properly adjusted.
10. Check rear compartment latch alignment.
10.1 Using a china marker, trace around latch retaining bolts to mark original location.
10.2 Adjust latch downward or side-to-side as necessary.
Torque:
Rear Compartment Latch Bolts: 10 N.m (89 in-lbs)
11. Check rear compartment striker alignment.
11.1 Using a china marker, trace around striker retaining bolts to mark original location.
11.2 Adjust striker upward or side-to-side as necessary.
Torque:
Rear Compartment Striker Bolts: 10 N.m (89 in-lbs)
12. Repeat steps 10 and 11 until satisfactory closing efforts have been achieved.
13. Install rear compartment sill plate. Snap finish panel into place and install retainers.
