Park Brake Adjustment

DRUM BRAKES

NOTICE: On new vehicles (less than 50 miles) and on vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes that have been serviced, before performing Park Brake Adjustment procedures, apply and release the brake pedal 20 times. This allows the adjuster to position the brake shoes and prevents premature wear of the brake linings due to improper park brake adjustment.

1. Remove park brake boot from console by squeezing sides of boot while pulling upward.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON HOIST.

2. Raise vehicle on hoist so wheels spin freely.

3. Pull park brake lever to third click.
4. Tighten adjuster nut so there is heavy drag to no rotation, equal to both rear wheels.

NOTICE: After installation of any new park brake system component(s) (e.g., park brake lever, cable, drum brake shoes, adjuster, lever, rear disc brake caliper, etc.), the park brake system must be set prior to performing final park brake adjustment. To set the park brake system after performing initial adjustment, pull up on the park brake lever three or four times with approximately 445 N (100 lbs.) of force.

5. Apply and release park brake several times. There should be no drag when park brake lever is in the rest position.
6. Pull park brake lever to third click. There should be heavy drag at both wheels when turned by hand.

7. If necessary, repeat steps 3 through 5 until adjustment is correct.

IMPORTANT: If both rear wheels do not exhibit similar drag in steps 5 through 7, check for damaged or incorrectly installed rear disc or drum brake assembly components, park brake cables, and/or park brake lever assembly. Correct as necessary; return to step 3 of this procedure.

8. Install park brake lever boot.
9. Lower vehicle from hoist.

DISC BRAKES

1. Remove park brake boot from console by squeezing in sides while pulling upward.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON HOIST.

2. Raise vehicle on hoist enough to remove rear wheels.
3. Remove rear wheel and tire assemblies.

4. Access to the park brake shoe adjuster is through a hole in the front face of the rotor.
5. Turn adjuster at rear rotor until brake disc locks. Turn back adjuster until brake disc just moves freely.

6. Pull park brake lever to third click.
7. Tighten adjuster nut on park brake lever until the rear wheel can just be turned by hand (heavy drag), equal to both rear wheels.

8. Apply and release park brake several times. There should be no drag when park brake lever is in the rest position.
9. Pull park brake lever to third click. There should be heavy drag at both wheels when turned by hand.
10. If necessary, repeat steps 3 through 5 until adjustment is correct.

IMPORTANT: If both rear wheels do not exhibit similar drag in steps 3 through 5, check for damaged or incorrectly installed rear disc or drum brake assembly components, park brake cables, and/or park brake lever assembly. Correct as necessary; return to step 3 of this procedure.

11. Install park brake lever boot.

NOTICE: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors/drums. Failure to do so can cause wheel bolts to loosen in service.

12. Position wheel and tire assembly onto hub.
13. Install wheel bolts and tighten in a crisscross pattern. Repeat tightening pattern to be sure torque is correct.
Torque: 125 Nm (92 inch lbs.)
14. Lower vehicle from hoist.
