Fuel Line - Tapping Noise From Engine Compartment
BULLETIN NO.: 00-T-29ISSUE DATE: May, 2000
CATEGORY TYPE: Engine-11
CATEGORY: Fuel
CORPORATION NO.: 00-06-04-020
SUBJECT:
Tapping Type Noise in Engine Compartment Area (Install New Isolated Fuel Feed and Return Pipe Retaining Clip)
MODELS AFFECTED:
2000 Saturn L-Series vehicles
CONDITION:
Some customers may comment about a tapping type noise that seems to be coming from the engine compartment or instrument panel area(s). The frequency of the tapping noise will increase with engine rpm. The noise is most audible while sitting in the passenger compartment with all the doors and windows closed and the engine at idle. The noise may also be described as sounding similar to a diesel engine.
CAUSE:
The opening and closing of fuel injectors causes noise to be transmitted through the metal fuel pipes in the engine compartment into the body of the vehicle at the engine compartment rail on the passenger side of the vehicle.
CORRECTION:
Verify that the tapping noise is coming from the fuel pipes by pulling the fuel pipes out of retaining clip on engine compartment rail on passenger side of vehicle. If tapping noise goes away when fuel pipes are removed from retaining clip, follow the procedure in this bulletin to install new isolated fuel pipe retaining clip (P/N 24425120).
PROCEDURE:
1. Remove fuel pipes from fuel pipe retaining clip on the engine compartment rail on passenger side of vehicle.
2. While holding fuel pipes out of the way, remove fuel pipe retaining clip from mounting stud by turning it counter-clockwise
3. Install new isolated fuel pipe retaining clip (P/N 24425120) by pressing clip straight down onto mounting stud. It is not necessary to turn the clip clockwise onto the stud.
4. Install fuel pipes into retaining clip.
5. Start engine and verify tapping noise has been eliminated. If noise is still present, inspect [1][2]EVAP line at front of dash area for contact with fuel feed and/or fuel return lines. If necessary, reposition or adjust EVAP line away from fuel feed and fuel return lines.
