Shift Control Housing

REMOVAL





1. Remove air cleaner and duct assembly.





2. Disconnect negative battery cable from battery.
3. Disconnect positive battery cable from battery
4. Remove hold-down retaining nut and screws, and lift off battery hold-down retainer.
5. Lift the battery out of vehicle, and place in a safe location.





6. Disconnect powertrain control module (PCM) J2 (black 28-way) harness connector by moving locking device outward toward fender.

NOTICE: The PCM J1 (black 80-way) harness connector does not need to be disconnected.

7. Remove PCM attachment bolts and move PCM out of way.

IMPORTANT: One bolt is located in fender well.

8. Remove battery tray.





9. Disconnect back-up light electrical connector.
10. Place transaxle in neutral.
11. Remove shift control housing retaining bolts.
12. Remove housing and gasket.

INSTALLATION
1. Clean gasket surfaces and install the shift housing gasket to case.

NOTICE: Make sure the shift housing is completely down on case before installing bolts. Torquing bolts on a misaligned housing will damage the case.

IMPORTANT: Clean and lubricate fastener with Saturn Transaxle Fluid. Wipe off excess fluid and install.

2. Install the shifter housing assembly on case.
- Torque: 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.)





3. Connect back-up light switch electrical connector.
4. Install battery tray.
5. Torque battery tray bolts.
- Torque: 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.)
6. Install PCM and PCM attachment bolts.
7. Reconnect PCM J2 (black 28-way) harness connector.





8. Make sure battery tray is clean.
9. Make sure that the battery cable ends are clean and free of corrosion. (Clean with a wire brush.)
10. Make sure that the battery is in good physical condition (e.g., no cracks, or obvious damage) and that the terminals are clean.
11. Install battery carefully in the battery tray; make sure that the terminals do not short against any metal during the installation.
12. Install battery hold-down retainer, locking the battery into the tray. Install and tighten the hold-down retainer nut and screws.
- Torque: 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.)
13. Install the positive battery cable first.
- Torque: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
14. Install the negative battery cable last.
- Torque: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)





15. Install air cleaner and duct assembly.
