Procedure





1. On Coupes, remove rear center reflex.

1.1 On 2000 model year Coupes only, remove rear license plate.

1.2 Open rear compartment lid.

1.3 On 2000 model year Coupes only, disconnect back-up lamp sockets from rear center reflex.

1.4 Remove rear center reflex attaching nuts on underside of rear compartment lid.

1.5 Remove rear center reflex by raising reflex upward from rear compartment lid.

1.6 Disconnect license plate lamp harness front rear compartment lid harness.





2. On Sedans, remove rear compartment lid outer panel.

2.1 Remove rear license plate.

2.2 Open rear compartment lid.

2.3 Remove four bolts inside lid.

2.4 Remove two outside bolts located behind where license plate was removed.

2.5 Slide outer panel upward to disengage from compartment lid.

2.6 Disconnect license plate bulb socket from lamps.





3. Remove retainer clip from lock cylinder assembly.

4. Disconnect lock rod from clip on lock cylinder assembly. Remove lock cylinder assembly.

5. Obtain replacement parts. Refer to "Parts Information" in this bulletin.





6. Remove E-clip at rear of lock cylinder and remove pawl.

7. Unhook return spring from case and slide spring from cylinder.





8. Remove cap from lock cylinder by inserting flat blade screwdriver between cap and case and carefully prying cap from case.

IMPORTANT:
When shutter is removed, the shutter springs may fall out.

9. Remove shutter.





10. Insert key and rotate a quarter turn clockwise. Slide cylinder from housing.





11. Push tumblers out of lock cylinders using a flat blade screwdriver.

12. If necessary, remove sidebar assembly by pushing it inward while tapping the cylinder, causing it to fall out.





13. Select the correct tumblers for the desired code by the number stamped on the tumbler.





IMPORTANT:
Make sure sidebar and tumbler springs are in place before installing tumblers.

14. Install tumblers by applying downward pressure until they lock into place.

15. Oil the lock set with a light oil or graphite lubricant.

16. Insert cylinder into housing. Insert key and rotate a quarter turn counterclockwise.

17. Replace shutter.

18. Replace cap onto lock cylinder.

19. Slide return spring onto lock cylinder and hook spring onto case.

20. Test valet key in lock cylinder to verity that valet key does not operate lock cylinder. If valet key does operate lock cylinder, repeat steps 8-19.

21. Replace pawl and L-clip at rear of lock cylinder.

22. Attach lock rod to clip on lock cylinder assembly. Position lock cylinder assembly in compartment lid.

23. Install retainer clip securing lock cylinder assembly in place.

24. On Sedans, install rear compartment lid outer panel.

24.1 Connect license plate bulb sockets to license plate lamp.





24.2 Position rear compartment outer panel on compartment lid so that top edge of the outer panel locks onto lip on compartment lid.

24.3 Loosely install attachments bolts.

IMPORTANT:
If using existing fasteners, make certain the sealing feature is adequate. If questionable, apply a body caulking compound or its equivalent to ensure against water intrusion.

24.4 Check panel alignment to surrounding components and align as required.

24.5 Tighten attachment bolts.





25. On Coupes install rear center reflex.

25.1 Connect license plate lamp harness to rear compartment lid harness.

25.2 On 2000 model year Coupes only, connect back-up lamp sockets to rear center reflex.

25.3 Position rear center reflex to compartment lid. Visually inspect rear center reflex to verify it is properly positioned to rear compartment lid.

25.4 Install rear center reflex attaching nuts.

Torque:
Rear Center Reflex Nuts: 5 N.m (43 in-lbs)

25.5 Close compartment lid.

25.6 On 2000 model year Coupes only, install license plate.

26. Check alignment of all panels that were reinstalled.
