Brakes - Updated Brake Pad Availability

NO: 02-I-16

DATE: November, 2002

SUBJECT:
Availability of Brake Pads with Increased Life on
All 1999-2002 Saturn Postal Wagons (Model Series SWP, Option Code RHD)

TO: All Saturn General Managers, Parts Managers, and Technicians

An alternative brake pad is now available which will provide longer service life.

NOTICE:
The new increased life brake pad is made of different material than the OEM brake pad material and may be more likely to cause noise and pulsation complaints. Therefore, the new increased life brake pad should only be used on vehicles with comments of insufficient brake pad life.

Vehicles used under severe operating conditions (such as mail delivery) may not meet customer expectations for brake pad life.

PROCEDURE:

1. Install new front brake pads following the procedure in the "Front Brake Pads" section of the appropriate model year S-Series Brakes Service Manuals.

IMPORTANT:
Long life brake pads can be identified by "GM-120-EE" stamped on the backing plate.

2. Follow break-in procedure listed in General Information, "Breaking In New Brake Pads" and "New Brake Shoes" sections of the appropriate model year S-Series Brakes Service Manuals.

PARTS REQUIREMENTS:

IMPORTANT:
New front brake springs should be installed with new pads. These are not included with long life brake pads. They must be ordered separately.
