Body and Frame: Description and Operation
UNDERBODYThe Saturn body utilizes unitized body design galvanized steel and non-galvanized steel, and high strength, low alloy steel (HSLA) in a space frame design.
This type of body construction requires that unitized body components be aligned properly to assure correct suspension location and dimensioning of underbody and upperbody components. Since each individual unibody component contributes directly to the structural integrity of the body, it is essential that proper welding, sealing and rustproofing techniques be observed when performing service and body operation.
Front fenders, doors, rear quarters and roof along with front and rear bumper fascias are bolted onto the uniframe for improved repairability.
ALIGNMENT CHECKING
There are two types of dimension checking systems described in this section.
THREE DIMENSIONAL METHOD
This is the method to locate collision repair parts. It ensures proper location and post repair performance of the vehicle. It is also useful for diagnosis of damage.
TWO DIMENSIONAL METHOD
This can be measured with the use of a tram bar. The measuring is between two points on a horizontal plane (point to point). (For estimating purposes only, not for repair work.)
