Crankshaft Position Sensor: Service and Repair

CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SENSOR

REMOVAL
1. Record preset radio stations.
2. Ignition Off.




3. Disconnect negative battery cable.
(1) Engine Harness Connection
(2) Battery Feed
(3) Starter Motor
(4) Starter Solenoid

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

4. Raise vehicle.
5. Remove the two starter solenoid harness connector attachment nuts.
6. Remove lower starter assembly to engine block bolt.
7. Remove upper starter assembly to engine block bolt.
8. Move starter right to clear engine block, then left to remove starter from flywheel housing.
9. Disconnect CKP sensor harness connector.
10. Remove CKP sensor attachment bolt and remove CKP sensor.

INSTALLATION




1. Lubricate CKP sensor O-ring with clean engine oil.
2. Install CKP sensor in engine block and attachment bolt.

Torque:
Crankshaft Position Sensor Bolt: 10 N.m (89 in-lbs)


3. Connect CKP sensor harness connector. Push in connector until a click is heard, then pull back to confirm a positive engagement.
4. Install starter into flywheel housing and align bolt holes.




5. Install upper and lower starter assembly to engine block bolts.

Torque:
Starter-to-Engine Bolts: 40 N.m (30 ft-lbs)


6. Install the two starter solenoid harness connections and attachment nuts.

Torque:
Starter Solenoid Harness Nuts (Large): 9 N.m (80 in-lbs)
Starter Solenoid Harness Nuts (Small): 3 N.m (27 in-lbs)


7. Lower vehicle.
8. Connect negative battery cable.

Torque:
Battery Terminal Bolts: 17 N.m (13 ft-lbs)


9. Reset clock and preset radio stations.
