31. Balance Shaft Clean and Inspect
BALANCE SHAFT CLEAN AND INSPECT(UNIT REPAIR)
1. Clean balance shafts in solvent. Remove balance shaft front bearing carriers from balance shafts.
2. Inspect bearing surfaces on balance shafts for scoring or unusual wear.
NOTICE: Care must be used when supporting balance shaft in vise to avoid damage to balance shaft. If balance shaft is damaged, it must be replaced.
3. Inspect balance shaft drive sprockets for wear, damage, or missing teeth.
4. When installing new balance shaft drive sprockets, wrap balance shaft with a shop rag and support in a vise being careful not to scratch, nick, or mar balance shaft.
Torque:
Balance Shaft Drive Sprockets: 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.).
5. Measure rear bearing journals on balance shafts, journals should be 36.723-36.743 mm (1.4458-1.4466 inch) in diameter.
6. Measure front bearing journals on balance shafts, front bearing journals should be 20.020-20.000 mm (0.7881-0.7874 inch) in diameter.
7. When balance shafts have been installed in engine block, check for smooth rotation, sticking, binding, or roughness.
