Steering Gear Bearing Preload

STEERING GEAR BEARING PRELOAD
ADJUSTMENT

IMPORTANT: Make adjustment with front wheels raised and steering wheel centered.





1. Loosen adjuster plug lock nut on steering gear housing.
2. Turn adjuster plug clockwise until it bottoms in steering gear housing.
3. Tighten steering gear adjuster plug.
Torque: Steering Gear Adjuster Plug: 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.)
4. Back-off adjuster plug 50 degrees, +/- 5 degrees (slightly less than one flat of nut).
5. Torque lock nut with a crows foot wrench while holding adjuster plug stationary.
Torque: Steering Gear Pre-Load Adjuster Plug Lock Nut: 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.)
6. Check steering wheel returnability after adjustment.
