Removal and Replacement

TOOLS REQUIRED
^ SA9156E Fuel Tank Lock Ring Remover

REMOVAL

1. Remove fuel tank.

NOTE: Clean all fuel pipe and hose connections and surrounding areas before disassembling to avoid possible contamination of the fuel system. Spray the fuel pump module cam-lock ring tang with penetrating oil prior to attempting removal.

2. Disconnect fuel lines from fuel pump module.

NOTE: To prevent retainer damage, do not attempt to remove the retainer with a 12 in. or shorter ratchet/breaker bar.

3. Use the Fuel Tank Lock Ring Remover SA9156E and remove the fuel pump module retaining ring. A 1/2 in. breaker bar (approximately 18 inches long) will easily loosen and remove the lock ring.

NOTE: To prevent bending of the sending unit float arm during removal, lift the pump module up slightly to disengage the orientation tabs in the fuel tank and rotate the module 45°.

4. Remove fuel pump module.

IMPORTANT: Always replace fuel pump module to tank seal (O-ring) whenever assembly is removed.

5. Discard fuel pump module to tank seal.
6. If sender unit is not being replaced, remove fuel level sender. (Refer to "Sender Unit and Float" procedure.)

INSTALLATION

1. Install fuel level sender onto fuel pump. (Refer to "Sending Unit and Float" procedure.)
2. Install new fuel pump with level sender and new fuel pump-to-tank seal. Ensure that orientation tabs are aligned.

3. Use Fuel Tank Lock Ring Remover (SA9156E) to install fuel pump lock ring.

4. Connect fuel lines and wiring harness.
5. Install fuel tank.
