Rear Wheel Speed Sensor
REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSORREMOVAL
The rear wheel speed sensor is contained within the hub/bearing assembly. The sensor is not serviceable separately. To replace a damaged rear wheel speed sensor, the entire hub/bearing assembly must be replaced.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.
1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove rear wheel and tire assembly corresponding to hub being replaced.
3. Disconnect electrical connector from ABS wheel speed sensor.
4. Vehicles equipped with rear disc brakes, perform the following:
4.1 Remove brake pipe to control arm support bracket.
4.2 Remove caliper-to-knuckle fasteners.
4.3 Remove caliper, hang from strut spring with mechanic's wire.
5. Remove drum/rotor retaining screw.
6. Remove drum/rotor.
7. Remove hub-to-rear axle control arm attachment nuts. Discard nuts.
8. Remove hub/bearing assembly.
INSTALLATION
NOTICE: New nuts must be used as torque retention of old nuts may not be sufficient.
1. Install hub and brake shield to rear axle control arm with new nuts.
Torque: Rear Hub Assembly-to-Knuckle Nuts: 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) + 30 to 45°
2. Install brake rotor/drum and tighten retaining screw.
Torque: Brake Drum Retaining Fastener: 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.)
3. On vehicles equipped with rear disc brakes, perform the following steps:
NOTICE: Clean caliper support bracket fasteners thoroughly with brake and choke cleaner (P/N 21007432 or equivalent). Apply Loctite 272 Threadlocker (or equivalent) to caliper support bracket fasteners. If Loctite 272 Threadlocker (or equivalent) is not available, new caliper support bracket fasteners must be used.
3.1 Install caliper to rear axle control arm, tighten fasteners.
Torque: Rear Caliper-to-Rear Control Arm Bolts: 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.)
3.2 Connect brake pipe support bracket to control arm.
Torque: Brake Pipe Bracket-to-Rear Control Arm: 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.)
IMPORTANT: Ensure that all electrical connections are fully seated and latches are engaged.
4. Connect ABS sensor electrical connector.
NOTICE: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors. Failure to do so can cause wheel bolts to loosen in service.
5. Position wheel and tire assembly onto hub.
6. Install wheel bolts and tighten in a star pattern.
6.1 Hand tighten all five wheel bolts.
6.2 Use a torque wrench to tighten wheel bolts using a star pattern.
Torque: Wheel Bolts (Initial Torque): 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.)
6.3 Use a torque wrench to final tighten wheel bolts using a star pattern.
Torque: Wheel Bolts (Final Torque): 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.)
7. Lower vehicle from hoist.
8. Program Electronic Brake Traction Control Module (EBTCM) with correct engine and transaxle options or DTC C0551 will set and traction control will not operate.
