BULLETIN NO.: 01-T-02A

ISSUE DATE: February, 2001

CATEGORY TYPE: ENGINE - 02

CATEGORY: Fuel

CORPORATION NO.: 00-06-04-056R

SUBJECT:
(MIL) SERVICE ENGINE SOON Telltale Is Illuminated With DTC P0440 - EVAP System or DTC P0455 - EVAP System Leak Detected (Inspect Fill Limit Vent Valve [FLVV] Hose Connection and Replace Fuel Tank If Necessary)

Due to a change in PARTS REQUIREMENTS, this bulletin has been revised and supersedes bulletin 01-T-02, which should be discarded.

MODELS AFFECTED:
2000-2001 Saturn L-Series vehicles

CONDITION:
Some customers may comment that the (MIL) SERVICE ENGINE SOON is illuminated and DTC P0440 (L61) or DTC P0455 (L81) has been stored.

CAUSE:
DTCs and an EVAP system leak may be caused by the convoluted vent hose between the EVAP canister and the fill limit vent valve (FLVV) disconnecting from the hose fitting on the FLVV

CORRECTION:
Follow the procedures in this bulletin to inspect the FLVV hose connection.

1. DTC P0440 or P0455 may be caused by other EVAP system leaks besides the condition described in this bulletin. Perform a complete visual inspection of the EVAP system before any disassembly of components looking for any of the following leak conditions, repair as necessary.

^ Fuel cap missing, improperly installed, or leaking

^ EVAP Vent Hose loose or damaged

^ EVAP Purge Solenoid disconnected Fuel filler neck leaking

2. If no EVAP leaks are found while inspecting the components in step 1, inspect the following components on the fuel tank assembly for EVAP leaks, and repair as necessary.

^ EVAP canister

^ Fuel Pump 0-ring Seal

^ Disconnected or damaged fuel tank vapor lines

3. Closely inspect FLVV hose connection for proper seating and engagement on the FLVV.

IMPORTANT:
Do not attempt to repair the hose connection to the FLVV. This hose connection is not serviceable. If hose is not connected to the FLVV, or if hose is not fully seated over all three barbs of FLVV hose nipple, replace fuel tank.

Refer to "Fuel Tank" removal and installation procedure in appropriate model year L-Series Engine service manual.
