Service Procedure

Disabling Frontal Inflators (All)





1. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.

2. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position and remove key.

3. Remove IGN1 mini-fuse from underhood fuse block.

4. Remove lower left I/P closeout panel.





5. Push out clips that secure the driver and passenger inflator module (YEL 2-way) connectors to I/P panel brace.

6. Remove CPA retainers and disconnect both (YEL 2-way) connectors.

Disabling Curtain Inflators (Sedan)





7. Remove C-pillar trim on both the left and right side of the vehicle.

7.1 Remove rear seat shoulder belt cover to expose shoulder belt fastener.

7.2 Remove shoulder belt fastener and shoulder belt.

7.3 Remove C-pillar trim assembly by pulling gently at C-pillar clip locations.

7.4 Route shoulder belt out of C-pillar trim access slot.





8. Remove CPA retainers and disconnect left and right curtain inflator module (YEL 2-way) connectors.

Disabling Curtain Inflators (Wagon)





9. Remove tail lamp access hole cover on both sides of vehicle.

10. Remove CPA retainers and disconnect left and right curtain inflator module (YEL 2-way) connectors.

SDM Replacement (All)

CAUTION:
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU HANDLE A INFLATABLE RESTRAINT SENSING AND DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM). DO NOT STRIKE OR JOLT THE SDM. BEFORE APPLYING POWER TO THE SDM:

^ REMOVE ANY DIRT, GREASE, ETC. FROM THE MOUNTING SURFACE.

^ POSITION THE SDM HORIZONTALLY ON THE MOUNTING SURFACE.

^ TIGHTEN ALL OF THE SDM FASTENERS AND SDM BRACKET FASTENERS TO THE SPECIFIED TORQUE VALUE.

FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE CORRECT PROCEDURES COULD CAUSE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, PERSONAL INJURY, OR UNNECESSARY SIR SYSTEM REPAIRS.

NOTICE:
If inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) is dropped or shows any sign of damage, it must be replaced.

NOTICE:
Prior to removing inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM), ignition key must be in the OFF position.

NOTICE:
Do not open the inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) case for any reason. Touching the connector pins or soldered components may cause electrostatic discharge damage. Repair of a faulty SDM is by replacement only.

11. Remove console rear screws.

12. Remove console front screws.

13. Lift rear of console.

14. Remove connector position assurance (CPA) retainers from SDM connectors.

15. Disconnect SDM connectors.





16. Remove nuts and SDM.

17. Obtain replacement SDM P/N 22672809. Refer to the number detailed in the illustration below for replacement SDM identification. Number on replacement SDM will have a 9 as indicated and is the only SDM to be installed on vehicle.

18. Install SDM and nuts to vehicle.

Torque:
SDM Nuts: 10 N.m (89 in-lbs)

19. Connect SDM connectors and install CPA retainers.

20. Install console and screws.

Torque:
Console Screws: 1.2 N.m (11 in-lbs)

Enabling Curtain Inflators (Sedan)





21. Connect left and right curtain inflator module (YEL 2-way) connectors and install CPA retainers.





22. Install C-pillar trim on both left and right sides of the vehicle.

22.1 Position C-pillar trim to vehicle.

22.2 Route shoulder belt into C-pillar trim at access slot.

22.3 Install C-pillar trim by pushing gently at clip locations.

CAUTION:
APPLY LOCTITE 242(R) (OR EQUIVALENT) ON ALL RESTRAINT FASTENERS PRIOR TO INSTALLATION.

22.4 Install rear shoulder belt to C-pillar.

Torque:
Rear Shoulder Belt-to-C-Pillar: 35 N.m (26 ft-lbs)

22.5 Install rear shoulder belt fastener cover.

22.6 Function rear seat shoulder belt to verify proper operation.

Enabling Curtain Inflators (Wagon)





23. Connect left and right curtain inflator module (YEL 2-way) connectors and install CPA retainers.

24. Install tail lamp access hole cover on both sides of vehicle.

Enabling Frontal Inflators (All)





25. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointed straight ahead.

26. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and remove key.

27. Connect both the driver and passenger inflator module (YEL 2-way) connectors and install CPA retainers.

28. Fasten clips on yellow 2-way connectors to I/P panel brace.

29. Install IGN1 mini-fuse in underhood fuse block.





30. Turn ignition On and verify AIR BAG telltale flashes seven times arid then goes Off. (If AIR BAG telltale does not go Off, refer to the "SIR Diagnostic System Check" procedure in the SIR section of the 2000/2001 L-Series Restraints Service Manual.)

31. Install lower left UP closeout panel.

IMPORTANT:
Do not cover any existing underhood labels when affixing Campaign Completion Label.

32. Affix Campaign Completion Label on a clean and dry surface of radiator core support, in an area clearly visible when hood is raised. (For more information, refer to "Campaign Completion Label" in this bulletin.)
