Installation
INSTALLATION1. Position steering knuckle onto axle shaft and install axle to hub washer and a new nut.
IMPORTANT: Do not tighten fastener at this time.
2. Attach steering knuckle to strut assembly using new bolts and nuts.
IMPORTANT: Do not tighten fastener at this time.
3. Install the ball stud through the knuckle attachment point and install bolt and nut.
4. Tighten steering knuckle to strut assembly fasteners in the following sequence using Torque-to-Angle Gauge SA9140E (or equivalent)
Torque: Front Strut-to-Knuckle (Initial Torque): 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
Front Strut-to-Knuckle (Final Torque): 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.) + 45° to 90°
5. Tighten lower control arm-to-steering knuckle. Hold bolt stationary and tighten nut.
Torque: Lower Control Arm-to-Steering Knuckle: 100 Nm (75 ft. lbs.)
IMPORTANT: Tie rod ends must be thoroughly cleaned before tightening nut.
6. Using Steering Linkage Installer J44015 (or equivalent) install the tie rod end into the steering knuckle.
Torque: Tie Rod End Linkage Installer: 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: Use a new nut. Torque retention of old nut may not be sufficient.
NOTICE: Hold ball stud from turning when installing nut. The boot can become torn and damaged if the ball stud turns.
7. Remove the linkage installer and install a new nut.
Torque: Tie Rod End-to-Knuckle Nut: 60 Nm (45 ft. lbs.)
8. Inspect boot for damage and replace part if damaged.
9. If equipped with ABS, install sensor mounting bracket and sensor.
Torque: ABS Sensor Bracket-to-Knuckle: 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.)
10. Install dust shield and tighten screws.
Torque: ABS Sensor-to-Bracket: 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.)
11. Install rotor and tighten rotor screw.
Torque: Front Rotor-to-Hub: 3.5 Nm (27 inch lbs.)
IMPORTANT: Apply Loctite 242(R) Threadlocker (or equivalent) on threads of caliper bracket bolts.
12. Install caliper mount bracket onto knuckle.
Torque: Caliper Mount Bracket-to-Knuckle: 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.)
13. Install stabilizer bar link to strut assembly.
Torque: Stabilizer Bar-to-Stabilizer Bar Link: 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.)
NOTICE: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors. Failure to do so can cause wheel bolts to loosen in service.
14. Position wheel onto hub.
15. Install wheel bolts and tighten in a star pattern.
15.1. Hand tighten all five wheel bolts.
15.2. Use a torque wrench to tighten wheel bolts using a star pattern.
Torque: Wheel Bolts (Initial Torque): 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.)
15.3. Use a torque wrench to final tighten wheel bolts using a star pattern.
Torque: Wheel Bolts (Final Torque): 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.)
16. Lower vehicle from hoist.
17. Depress brake pedal and tighten axle to hub nut in the following sequence:
Torque: Nut to: 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.) to seat the bearing back nut off and retighten to: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) using a torque angle gauge turn nut additional 90 degrees. If required, continue turning nut until a cotter hole aligns with castle nut slot.
18. Install cotter pin.
19. Perform vehicle wheel alignment.
