Curtain Inflator Modules (If Equipped) - Sedan

Service manual update for the 2000/2001 Saturn L-Series Restraints and 2001 Saturn L-Series Body/Electrical Volume II Service Manuals. Refer to Technical Information Bulletin 00-T-73, December, 2000.

CAUTION:
SIR SYSTEM SHOULD BE DISABLED BEFORE REMOVAL OF INFLATOR. THE INFLATOR MUST BE DISPOSED OF PROPERLY. ALL INTERIOR GARNISH MOLDING SNAP-IN CLIPS MUST BE REPLACED WHEN TRIM IS REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE. TWISTING OF THE INFLATOR MUST NOT BE ALLOWED.

REMOVAL

^ Disable the SIR system. (Refer to "Disabling the Frontal and Curtain Inflators" procedure in this service manual.)





2. Remove headliner and garnish moldings from vehicle. (Refer to "Headliner" removal procedure in the Interior Trim Section of the 2001 L-Series Body/Electrical Volume II Service Manual.)

IMPORTANT:
Spaceframe clips and plastic guides must be removed from structure. Spaceframe clips are designed for one use only. The new inflator assembly will contain new spaceframe clips and plastic guides attached to the assembly.








3. Remove fasteners from inflator retention tabs and spaceframe clips-to-structure in locations shown in illustration.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION:
IF ORIGINAL BAG IS BEING INSTALLED CARE MUST BE TAKEN TO OBSERVE THE FOLLOWING POINTS:

^ ROOF RAIL MUST BE UNDAMAGED AND STRAIGHT.

^ SCREW HOLE IN CURTAIN INFLATOR FABRIC MUST NOT BE FRAYED.

^ WASHER ON RETAINING SCREWS MUST FIRMLY CLAMP THE BAG FLAT WHEN TORQUED.

NOTICE:
If curtain inflator is being replaced due to deployment, the spaceframe snap clips must be replaced. The new curtain inflator assembly is shipped with plastic guides and new spaceframe clips that are pre-torqued.

NOTICE:
Care must be taken when removing spaceframe clips as not to damage roof rail sheet metal.





1. To remove spaceframe clips:

1.1 Bend and break off one side of clip as shown in illustration.

1.2 Push clip into body mounting hole.

1.3 To aid in removal of broken spaceframe clips, remove assist handle bracket bolts and bracket from roof rail.

1.4 Slide a magnetic tool through the inside of the roof rail and pull out the broken clip.

1.5 Install assist handle bracket and retaining bolts to roof rail.

Torque:
Assist Handle Bracket-to-Roof Rail
Bolts: 16 N.m (12 ft-lbs)





2. Start at rear of vehicle and install inflator head to structure mounting studs.





3. Hand start nuts onto studs.





4. Working from the rear of vehicle forward, install retaining tabs to structure to hold inflator assembly to vehicle. The stripe on the inflator module should be used as a guide to ensure inflator is not twisted.





5. Install inflator fasteners and torque fasteners.

Torque:
Curtain Inflator Retaining Bolt (10 mm Hex
Head): 10 N.m (89 in-lbs)

Torque:
Curtain Inflator Retaining Nut (10 mm Hex
Head): 10 N.m (89 in-lbs)

Torque:
Curtain Inflator Retaining Screw (7 mm Hex
Head): 2.5 N.m (22 in-lbs)

6. Install headliner and garnish moldings. (Refer to "Headliner" procedure in the Interior Trim Section of the 2001 L-Series Body/Electrical Volume II Service Manual.)

7. Enable the SIR system. (Refer to "Enabling the Frontal and Curtain Inflators" procedure in this service manual.)
