Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Replacement

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)

REMOVAL




1. Record preset radio stations.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable.
3. Disconnect PCM J2 black 28-way harness connector by moving locking device toward fender.
4. Remove PCM J1 black 80-way connector bolt and disconnect.
5. Remove PCM attachment bolts and remove PCM.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: Ground strap must be attached to PCM attachment bolt. The ground strap is a case ground that provides electromagnetic wave interference (EMI) protection. Correct torque is critical.




1. Install PCM and attachment bolts.

Torque:
PCM Attachment Bolts: 6 N.m (53 in-lbs)

2. PCM connector bolt torque is critical.
Connect PCM J1 black 80-way connector and install attachment bolt.

Torque:
PCM J1 Connector-to-PCM Bolt: 8 N.m (71 in-lbs)

3. Connect PCM J2 black 28-way connector and engage locking device.
4. Connect negative battery cable.
5. Reset clock and preset radio stations.

IMPORTANT:
^ Steps 6 - 10 should only be performed if a new PCM was installed.
^ If a new PCM is being installed, it MUST be reprogrammed with new software and calibrations. Refer to "Service Stall System (SSS) User Guide" for reprogramming procedures. The PCM may be damaged if the reprogramming process is interrupted. Make sure the Scan tool is connected securely to the DLC and the vehicle battery has sufficient charge. Make sure the original PCM has the correct VIN and vehicle options.

6. Reprogram the PCM. Programming and Relearning

IMPORTANT: The Service Stall System (SSS) programming procedure requires a specialized computer system linked to the vehicle manufacture and must be performed by the dealership.

IMPORTANT: The new PCM must learn the passlock password from the BCM. When the PCM reprogram is completed, the ignition MUST be cycled for the PCM to allow the engine to be started. The password will have immediately learned the password before the key was cycled Off.

7. Ignition Off for 10 seconds.
8. Ignition On.

IMPORTANT: Following PCM reprogramming the PCM will have to learn the crankshaft notch variation for misfire diagnostics.

9. Perform "Crankshaft Relearn Procedure". Refer to "Crankshaft Relearn Procedure" under DTC P1336 for procedure. This procedure will flash the SERVICE telltale.
10. Verify no DTCs exist. If one exists, refer to the specific DTC diagnostic in "Computers and Control System".
