REMOVAL

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.

1. Position vehicle on hoist.
2. Raise vehicle.
3. Remove right front wheel.
4. Drain transaxle fluid.

5. Remove cotter pin from lower ball joint and discard. Loosen nut and back off until top of nut is even with top of threads.

NOTICE: On ABS equipped vehicles, the outer CV joint has a speed sensor ring. Using the incorrect tool or procedure to separate the control arm from the knuckle can damage the ring, resulting in a loss of ABS operation.

NOTICE: Do not attempt to separate the joint using a wedge type tool because the boot may be damaged.

6. Separate ball joint from steering knuckle using Lower Control Arm Ball Stud Separator SA9132S and remove nut.

NOTICE: Do not attempt to separate the joint using a wedge type tool because the boot may be damaged.

7. Separate the tie rod end from the knuckle using Tie Rod Separator SA91100C.
7.1 Remove the cotter pin and discard.
7.2 Remove nut.
7.3 Separate tie rod end from the knuckle using the tie rod end separating tool.
8. Separate right axle from intermediate shaft.

9. On DOHC (LL0) vehicles, remove intake bracket to intake manifold bolt.
10. Remove intake bracket to intermediate shaft support bolt.
11. Remove two intermediate shaft to engine block bolts.
12. Carefully slide intermediate shaft out of transaxle.

13. Remove engine to transaxle stiffening brace bolts and remove brace.
14. Remove three flywheel housing dust cover bolts and remove dust cover.

15. Using Axle Seal Puller SA9133T, remove seal by threading puller through steel seal body as close to outside diameter as possible.

INSTALLATION
1. Clean seal bore in housing.

2. Apply a light bead of Loctite 515(r) Gasket Eliminator Sealant (P/N 21005993) or equivalent on the diameter of the seal that presses into the bore.

NOTICE: Prior to using seal installer SA9113T, inspect tool for any nicks or burrs that may damage seal lip.

3. Use tool Axle Seal Installer SA9113T to install seal. Place seal on tool and be sure to keep seal lined up with bore during installation.
(Automatic transaxle shown, manual transaxle similar.)

4. Install flywheel housing dust cover with three bolts.
Torque:
Flywheel Housing Cover-to-Clutch Housing Bolts: 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.)
5. Install engine to transaxle stiffening brace and install brace to engine, and brace to transaxle bolts.
Torque:
Engine-to-Transaxle Stiffening Brace Bolts: 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: Use caution not to damage axle seal when intermediate shaft is installed into transaxle.

6. Install Axle Seal Protector SA91112T (indicated by the arrow) inside seal.
(Left side shown, right side similar.)
7. Install intermediate shaft into transaxle.
8. After splines clear seal protector, but before snapping axle into place, remove seal protector tool.

9. Position intermediate shaft support and install two bolts.
Torque:
Intermediate Shaft Support Bracket-to-Engine Bolts: 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.)
10. On DOHC (LL0) vehicles, position intake manifold support bracket and install intake bracket to intake manifold bolt.
Torque:
Intake Manifold Support Bracket-to-Intake Manifold Bolt (LL0): 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.)
11. Install intake bracket to intermediate shaft support bolt.
Torque:
Intake Manifold Support Bracket-to-Intermediate Shaft Support Bracket Nut (LL0): 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.)

12. Install right axle to intermediate shaft.

NOTICE: Take care not to damage rubber boot when installing ball joint to knuckle.

13. Clean and lubricate ball joint threads.
14. Position ball joint into steering knuckle.
15. Install nut to lower ball joint and torque.
Torque:
Front Lower Control Arm Ball Stud-to-Steering Knuckle Nut: 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.)
15.1 If necessary, after torquing, tighten nut additionally to align slot in nut with cotter pin hole in ball joint and install a new cotter pin and bend.
16. Clean and lubricate threads on tie rod end.
17. Position tie rod end into steering knuckle.

18. Install nut to tie rod end and torque.
Torque:
Tie Rod-to-Steering Knuckle Nut: 25 + 134° Nm (18 + 134° ft. lbs.)

NOTICE: Before installing wheel remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors. Failure to do so can cause wheel lug nuts to loosen in service.

19. Position wheel onto hub.
20. Install wheel nuts and torque in a crisscross pattern. Repeat torquing procedure to make sure torque is correct.
Torque:
Wheel Lug Nuts (In Crisscross Pattern): 140 Nm (103 ft. lbs.)

IMPORTANT: Clean and lubricate fastener with Saturn Transaxle Fluid. Wipe off excess fluid and install.

21. Install drain plug.
Torque:
Transaxle Drain Plug: 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.)
22. Fill transaxle to proper level using Saturn Transaxle Fluid.Saturn Transaxle Fluid: 2.5 Liters (2.6 quarts)
23. Check for proper fluid level using "Transaxle Fluid Level Checking Procedure".
