Shift Control Housing (On-Vehicle)
SHIFT CONTROL HOUSING (ON-VEHICLE)REMOVAL
1. Remove air cleaner and duct assembly.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable from battery.
3. Disconnect positive battery cable from battery
4. Remove hold-down retaining nut and screws, and lift off battery hold-down retainer.
5. Lilt the battery out of vehicle, and place in a safe location.
IMPORTANT: The PCM J1 (black 80-way) harness connector does not need to be disconnected.
6. Disconnect powertrain control module (PCM) J2 (black 28-way) harness connector by moving locking device outward toward fender.
7. Remove PCM attachment bolts and move PCM out of way.
8. Remove battery tray bolts and tray.
8.1 One bolt is located in fender well.
9. Disconnect back-up lamp electrical connector.
10. Place transaxle in neutral.
11. Remove shift control housing retaining bolts.
12. Remove housing and gasket.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean gasket surfaces and install the shift housing gasket to case.
NOTICE: Make sure the shift housing is completely down on case before installing bolts. Torquing bolts on a misaligned housing will damage the case.
IMPORTANT: Clean and lubricate fastener with Saturn Transaxle Fluid. Wipe off excess fluid and install.
2. Install the shifter housing assembly on case.
Torque:
Shift Control Housing-to-Case Bolts: 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.)
3. Connect back-up lamp switch electrical connector.
4. Install battery tray and bolts.
4.1 One bolt is located in fender well.
Torque:
Battery hay-to-Frame Rail Bolts: 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.)
5. Install PCM and PCM attachment bolts.
Torque:
PCM Attachment Bolts: 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.)
6. Reconnect PCM J2 (black 28-way) harness connector.
7. Make sure battery tray is clean.
8. Make sure that the battery cable ends are clean and free of corrosion. (Clean with a wire brush.)
9. Make sure that the battery is in good physical condition (e.g., no cracks, or obvious damage) and that the terminals are clean.
10. Install battery carefully in the battery tray; make sure that the terminals do not short against any metal during the installation.
11. Install battery hold-down retainer, locking the battery into the tray. Install and tighten the hold-down retainer nut and screws.
Torque:
Battery Hold Down-to-Battery Tray Fasteners: 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.)
IMPORTANT: Attach positive then, negative terminal.
12. Install the positive battery cable first.
Torque:
Battery Terminal Bolts: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
IMPORTANT: Attach positive then, negative terminal.
13. Install the negative battery cable last.
Torque:
Battery Terminal Bolts: 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.)
14. Install air cleaner and duct assembly.
