Instrument Panel (IP) - Removal Procedure

TOOLS REQUIRED
KM-210 Steering Wheel Puller

REMOVAL




1. Put shifter in neutral and block wheels.
2. Disconnect negative battery cable.
3. Disable the SIR System. Refer to "SIR Disable/Enable" procedure. (However, you will not be able to remove key from ignition.)
4. Gently pull on left and right side console extensions to remove extensions.

On power windows




5. Using a small flat blade tool, gently pry upward on rear portion of the power window switch to partially disengage switch from console.
6. Disconnect power window switch harness from switch and remove power window switch.




7. Disengage console park brake boot by squeezing the boot in while pulling upward.
8. Lift park brake boot over park brake assembly.




9. Remove front console tray by pulling upward on tray assembly.
10. Disconnect console wiring harness from main body harness located under front console tray.

On automatic transmissions




11. Pull upon PRNDL cover to disengage cover.

On 5 - speed transmissions




12. Pull up on shifter boot to disengage boot.




13. Move front seats to forward most position and remove console rear fasteners.
14. Remove console front fasteners.
15. Gently lift console up and over shifter or PRNDL cover and remove console assembly.




16. Remove I/P-to-floor pan bracket nuts from studs.




17. Remove center trim plate by grabbing trim plate at A/C vent area and gently pulling to disengage attaching clips.
18. Tilt trim plate sideways and disconnect trim plate switch harnesses, then remove trim plate.




19. Remove radio fasteners and partially remove radio to expose radio electrical connectors.
20. Disconnect radio electrical connector(s), antenna, and radio ground strap from radio. Then remove radio.




21. Remove HVAC control head fasteners and partially remove controller. Let control head hang loose in I/P opening.




22. Disconnect wiring harness clip to I/P at center outlet.




23. Turn steering wheel to 3 o'clock position.
24. Remove inflator module by inserting a stubby flat blade screwdriver into the triangle shaped hole in rear steering wheel shroud.
25. Turn screwdriver to release spring fastener, while lifting up on corner of bag closest to that fastener.
26. Repeat for second fastener.
27. Turn steering wheel to 9 o'clock position.
28. Repeat steps until all spring fasteners are released.




29. Disconnect inflator module harness and horn lead.
30. Remove inflator module.




31. Disconnect cruise control (if equipped) switch connection and disconnect harness from steering wheel.




32. Remove steering wheel attachment nut and discard.




33. Install Steering Wheel Puller KM-210.
34. Remove steering wheel while feeding the wiring through the wheel opening.

NOTE:
^ Always align the front wheels to the straight-ahead position when installing or removing a coil assembly. If a coil is removed without the wheels in. straight-ahead position and steering wheel has not been moved, the same coil assembly can be reinstalled if coil hub has not been rotated.
^ If yellow tab is not available, use tape to prevent SIR coil from rotating.

35. Insert yellow tab or use a piece of tape to prevent SIR coil from rotating.




36. Remove upper and lower steering column cover attachments.




37. Remove ignition switch bezel and remove covers.




38. Remove wiper/washer switch and headlamp/turn switch.

IMPORTANT: Cover top of steering column.

39. Position steering column to its lowest position.




40. Remove left side I/P lower closeout panel (hush panel) retainers and let closeout panel (hush panel) hang loose.




41. Remove I/P filler (knee bolster) by pulling at attaching clip locations.




42. Remove upper and lower I/P cluster trim plate fasteners and remove trim plate.




43. Remove upper and lower I/P cluster fasteners and pull rearward to remove cluster.




44. Disconnect I/P cluster wiring harness from I/P cluster.




45. Remove left side HVAC vent housing and disconnect electrical connections.




46. Remove left side lower air outlet duct.




47. Open glove compartment door.
48. Remove glove compartment lamp assembly by pulling on lamp plunger.
49. Disconnect glove compartment lamp wiring harness connector from glove compartment lamp.




50. Remove right side I/P lower closeout panel (hush panel) retainers.
51. Pull closeout panel (hush panel) rearward to detach from forward retainers.




52. Remove right side heater outlet assembly retainer and remove outlet.




53. Remove glove compartment door fasteners and door.




54. Remove glove compartment bin fasteners.




55. Slowly remove glove compartment bin tilting bin downward to expose the BCM residing on top of glove compartment.
56. Remove BCM from glove compartment by sliding module out of attaching slots.
57. Remove glove compartment bin.
58. Let BCM hang on wiring harness.




59. Pull upward at vent locations and remove windshield defroster grille.




60. Unsnap hood release handle from I/P by using a small screwdriver to disengage retainer clips on both sides.




61. Remove data link connector (DLC) by pulling downward at connector location.




62. Remove I/P harness clips to I/P at lower steering column location.




63. Remove I/P harness clips to I/P at center outlet and glove compartment opening location.




64. Remove fastener at left side I/P to beam location.
65. Remove two fasteners behind I/P cluster location.
66. Remove two fasteners at upper glove compartment location.
67. Remove two fasteners at end bracket location.
68. Remove three fasteners at windshield defroster location.




69. Carefully remove I/P assembly from vehicle.
