Liftgate Replacement
Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the battery negative terminal.
2. Remove the weather-strip around the rear of the lift gate opening.
3. Unsnap the 5 upper headliner trim retainers and let hang.
4. Remove the cargo shade by pushing to one side to release and lift up.
5. Unsnap the 3 lower quarter glass trim retainers and let hang.
6. Remove the left tail light access panel and disconnect the electrical connections.
7. Tape a one-feed wire onto both electrical connections.
8. Remove both the left and right pass through grommets from the body.
9. Pull the wires up through the grommet hole on the right and feed the wire from the back side around any obstruction.
10. Remove the washer nozzle from the lift gate by removing the grommet by prying to one side then, using a small screwdriver to depress the snap, pull up and out.
11. Disconnect the washer hose and connect a feed wire onto the hose if the lift gate is to be reinstalled after service.
12. To protect the body of the vehicle, install tape around the edges of the roof and quarter panel.
13. Place clean rags or towels between the roof and the lift gate.
14. Remove the E-clips from both of the hinge pins.
15. With 2 assistants, 3 people total, remove the 2 snap clip retainers from the support strut to the body locations.
16. Remove the struts and let hang.
17. Drive out the hinge pins.
18. Remove the lift gate.
19. Disassemble the lift gate as necessary. If replacing the lift gate, transfer any parts as necessary. Refer to the specific procedures in this service manual for each component that needs to be removed and installed.
Installation Procedure
1. With assistants, install the lift gate to the hinges on the body and install the 2 hinge pins and the E-clip retainers to the hinge pins.
2. Install the 2 support struts to the lift gate.
3. Remove the rags or towels from between the roof and lift gate.
4. Remove the duct tape from around the edges of the roof and quarter panels.
5. Connect the washer hose and pull the feed wire to route the hose if the old lift gate was reinstalled after service.
6. Install the washer nozzle to the lift gate and install the grommet by prying to one side and pulling around the base of the washer nozzle.
7. Pull the wires down through the grommet hole on the right and guide the wire from the back side around any obstruction.
8. Remove the tape feed wire from both of the electrical connections.
9. Install both the left and right pass through grommets to the body.
10. Connect the 2 electrical connections and install the left tail light access panel.
11. Snap the lower quarter glass trim into place.
12. Snap the upper headliner trim into place.
13. Install the weather-strips around the rear of the lift gate opening.
14. Connect the battery negative terminal.
