POWER STEERING PUMP

^ TOOLS REQUIRED
- SA9162C-2 Power Steering Pump Pulley Installer
- SA921SNE Puller

REMOVAL

1. Remove air cleaner assembly.
1.1. Disconnect Manifold Air Flow (MAP) electrical connector.

1.2. Unsnap EVAP purge valve assembly and secure out of the way of air cleaner assembly.

1.3. Remove air cleaner lid.
1. Loosen hose clamp at throttle body.
2. Slide off flexible MAF hose-to-throttle body hose.
3. Unclamp air cleaner lid.
4. Remove air cleaner lid, MAF sensor, and hose as an assembly.
1.4. Remove air cleaner from air box.

1.5. Remove air box mount bolt.
1.6. Remove air box.

2. Remove power steering pump pulley bolts.

3. Relieve spring tension from accessory drive belt and remove belt from power steering pump pulley.
4. Remove pulley.

5. Place an approved drain container under the power steering pump.
6. Remove power steering pump pressure and return hoses and allow system to drain.

7. Remove power steering pump to bracket attachment fasteners.
8. Remove pump from vehicle.

DISASSEMBLY

1. Using power steering pump hub Puller SA9218NE (or equivalent), remove hub.

2. Remove retaining ring.
2.1. If difficulty is encountered, use a C-clamp (one side on end cover, the other on pump drive shaft) to depress end cover, easing removal of retaining ring. Make sure to insert a piece of wood (or other protective material) between C-clamp and pump drive shaft.
2.2. Place a punch into the pump housing access hole and remove retaining ring.

3. Gently push or tap on drive shaft to assist in removing end cover.
4. Remove the following internal pump parts, in two groups:
Group 1: End cover, O-ring, pressure plate spring, pressure plate.
Group 2: Drive shaft with pump rotor, pump vanes, pump ring, thrust plate, and shaft retaining ring.

5. Remove the following parts from pump housing:
5.1. O-ring seal.
5.2. Dowel pins from pump housing.
5.3. Drive shaft seal.

6. Remove pressure plate, pressure plate spring, and O-ring from end cover.

7. Remove shaft retaining ring from drive shaft and discard.
8. Remove pump rotor, pump vanes, pump rings, and thrust plate from drive shaft.
9. Separate pump rotor, pump vanes, and pump ring.
10. Clean all parts in power steering fluid (GM Spec. 9985010) and dry.

IMPORTANT: Replace any damaged components. Do not attempt to remove damage with abrasive cleaners.

IMPORTANT: A wavy pattern on the pump ring face will be present with low mileage and should not be mistaken for premature wear.

11. Inspect pump ring, pump vanes, thrust plate, and drive shaft for scoring, pitting, or chatter marks.

ASSEMBLY

1. Lubricate new drive shaft seal with power steering fluid (GM Spec. 9985010).
2. Install new drive shaft seal into pump housing using a suitably sized socket as a driver.

3. Install thrust plate and pump rotor onto drive shaft.
4. Install new shaft retaining ring onto drive shaft.
5. Install drive shaft, rotor, and thrust plate assembly into housing.

6. Install pump ring dowel pins into pump housing through thrust plate.

IMPORTANT: The pump ring face has an indentation on one side near dowel hole. The ring must be installed with indentation facing up. If ring is installed upside down, the pump will not function.

7. Install pump ring (with holes correctly positioned onto dowel pins) into housing.
8. Install vanes into pump rotor. Vanes have a radius at both ends and may be installed in either direction.
9. Lubricate new pump housing O-ring with power steering fluid and install into groove in housing.
10. Align pressure plate dowel holes with dowel pins and install plate into housing.

11. Position pressure plate spring against pressure plate. The spring may be installed in either orientation.
12. Lubricate new end cover O-ring with power steering fluid (GM Spec. 9985010) and install onto end cover.
13. Lubricate outer edge of end cover with power steering fluid (GM Spec. 9985010).

14. Press end cover into pump housing.

IMPORTANT: Make sure retaining ring is fully seated in housing groove. If difficulty is encountered, use a press as shown or a C-clamp (one side on end cover, the other on pump driver shaft) to depress end cover, easing installation to retaining ring. Make sure to insert a piece of wood (or other protective material) between C-clamp and pump drive shaft.

15. Install retaining ring into groove in pump housing, with ring opening near, but not across, access hole in housing.

16. Install pump pulley hub using Power Steering Pump Pulley Installer SA9162C-2 (or equivalent).

INSTALLATION

1. Position power steering pump into vehicle.

IMPORTANT: Do not tighten any bolts until all bolts have been started.

2. Install power steering pump-to-bracket bolts and tighten.
^ Power Steering Pump-to-Bracket Bolts (L81): 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)

3. Inspect O-ring seal on pressure hose and replace if necessary. Install pressure and return hoses.
^ Power Steering High Pressure Line-to-Pump (L81): 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.)

4. Install pump pulley and hand tighten bolts only.

5. Install accessory drive belt.
6. Tighten pump pulley bolts.
^ Power Steering Pump Pulley-to-Hub Bolt: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.)

7. Install air cleaner assembly.
7.1. Install air box. Ensure that lower pin engages into rubber mount grommet and that lower duct fits into resonator.
7.2. Install air box mount bolt.
7.3. Install air cleaner.

7.4. Install air cleaner lid. Ensure that the lid hinge is fully engaged in air box slots or the lid may not properly seal.
7.5. Slide flexible hose and hose clamp on throttle body.
7.6. Tighten hose clamp.

7.7. Install EVAP purge valve assembly.

7.8. Connect MAF electrical connection.
8. Fill power steering pump fluid reservoir with clean power steering fluid (GM Spec. 9985010).
9. Bleed power steering system.
