Steering: Service and Repair
POWER STEERING SYSTEM BLEEDPROCEDURE
NOTICE: When adding fluid or making a complete fluid change, always use power steering fluid meeting GM Spec. 9985010.Failure to use proper fluid may cause hose and seal damage and fluid leaks.
1. With engine off, front wheels off ground, and wheels turned all the way to the left, check reservoir level. Add fluid, if necessary, to FULL mark on fluid level indicator.
IMPORTANT: It may require turning wheels from side to side several times.
2. Bleed system by turning wheels from side to side without hitting stops.
Keep fluid level at FULL mark. Fluid with air in it has a light tan appearance. This air must be eliminated from fluid before normal steering action can be obtained.
3. Start engine. With engine idling, check fluid level. If necessary, add fluid (GM Spec. 9985010) to bring level to FULL mark.
4. Return wheels to center position. Lower front wheels to ground. Continue running engine for two or three minutes.
5. Road test vehicle to make sure steering functions normally and is free from noise.
IMPORTANT: Inspect for fluid leakage at connection points along power steering system.
6. Recheck fluid level as described in steps 1, 2, and 3. Make sure fluid level is at FULL mark after system has stabilized at its normal operating temperature.
