A/C - Blower Motor Inoperative/Erratic Operation

File in Section: 01 - HVAC

Bulletin No.: 03-01-38-004

Issue Date: May, 2003

Subject:
HVAC Blower Motor Inoperative and/or Blower Speed Is Higher/Lower Than Requested Speed (Replace HVAC Control Assembly)

Models Affected:
2003 ION Vehicles built up to and including VIN Breakpoint 3Z161066

Attention:
General Manager, Fixed Operations Manager, Parts Manager, Technician

Condition:

Some customers may comment on two possible conditions:

^ The HVAC blower motor switch may be inoperative.

^ Blower speed is higher or lower than requested speed (for example, blower may run at speed 1 when switch is in speed 4 position).

Cause:

If the blower motor fan switch is rotated rapidly, the switch contacts may come out of position, causing the blower motor to become inoperative or to operate at a different speed.

Correction:

Replace HVAC control assembly.

Service Procedure

1. Identify condition affecting vehicle, if any.

^ If the HVAC blower motor switch is inoperative, refer to the Diagnostic Table "Blower Motor Inoperative" in the 2003 Saturn ION HVAC Service Manual. This table is reproduced for your reference.

^ If the blower speed is higher or lower than requested speed, refer to the Diagnostic Table "Blower Motor Malfunction" in the 2003 Saturn ION HVAC Service Manual. This table is reproduced for your reference.

2. After repairs are complete, verify that blower motor performs properly.

Blower Motor Inoperative

The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

4. The blower motor supply voltage circuit is the High speed blower motor control circuit. A short to ground on the control circuits will open the Run fuse. Be sure to check all the blower motor control circuits for a short to ground.

6. There are two ignition 3 voltage supply circuits going to the HVAC control assembly. Test the one that supplies the blower motor switch.

Blower Motor Malfunction

The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

3. Test the Low, Med 1, Med 2 and High blower motor control circuits for an open short to voltage, short to ground or high resistance. The High blower motor control circuit uses the Body Control Module (BCM) as a junction block. Be sure to check all three High blower motor control circuits.
