Engine Controls - SES Lamp ON/DTC P0606 Stored

File in Section: 06 - Engine/Propulsion System

Bulletin No.: 04-06-04-010

Issue Date: March, 2004

Subject:
(MIL) Service Engine Soon Telltale Illuminated, DTC P0606 May Be Stored (Reprogram ECM)

Models Affected:
2003-2004 Saturn ION Vehicles with 2.2L Four-Cylinder Engine
(VIN F - RPO L61)

Attention: Fixed Operations Manager and Technician

Condition:

Some customers may comment that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Service Engine Soon (SES) telltale is illuminated. Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0606 (Engine Control Module [ECM] Internal Memory Performance) may be stored.

Cause:

The ECM software for this diagnostic may be erroneously detecting normal voltage variations during the power down sequence as a memory error, and storing a DTC P0606. Since this DTC is currently defined as a Type A code, the SES will be illuminated after one such occurrence.

Correction:

Install a new service calibration that will redefine DTC P0606 as a Type B code.

To correct this condition, technicians should check the current ECM calibration ID. Refer to "Verifying Calibration ID Number" in the Service Procedure section of this bulletin.

^ If the current ECM calibration ID is the same or greater than the calibration listed in the "Calibration Information" table, then no updated calibration is available. Refer to diagnostic procedure for DTC P0606 in the Engine Controls section of the 2003 or 2004 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 1. (SI Document ID # 875956 [2003 model year vehicles] or 1206123 [2004 model year vehicles).)

^ If the current ECM calibration ID is not the same or greater than the calibration listed in the "Calibration Information" table, then the ECM should be reprogrammed with the latest available service calibration. Refer to "Reprogramming ECM" in the Service Procedure section of this bulletin.

Service Procedure:

Verifying Calibration ID Number

Important:
You must view calibration numbers using the TECH 2 Scan Tool and NOT the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS).

1. Connect Scan Tool to the vehicle.

2. Navigate to the 2.2L (VIN F) Powertrain Menu.

3. Select ID INFORMATION.

4. Select ENGINE INFORMATION.

5. Read CALIBRATION ID.

1. (SI Document ID # 875956 [2003 model year vehicles] or 1206123 [2004 model year vehicles].)
^ If calibration ID number is not the same or greater than the calibration listed in the "Calibration Information" table, then reprogram ECM with latest available service calibration.

Reprogramming ECM:

Important:
Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) data release TIS 3.0 2004 (distributed March 2004) or greater is required in order to reprogram the engine control module (ECM).

1. Install new calibration. Refer to the "Calibration Information" table to select the correct calibration for the vehicle being serviced. (If newer calibrations than those listed below are available, install the latest available service calibration.) Refer to "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) User Guide for reprogramming procedures.

2. Verify that condition has been eliminated after reprogramming the ECM.
