Backing Plate: Service and Repair
Rear Brake Backing Plate Replacement
Removal Procedure
Caution: Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.
1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
2. Remove the rear wheel and the tire assembly.
3. Disassemble the rear drum brakes.
4. Disconnect the rear brake pipe from the wheel cylinder. Plug the open brake pipes to prevent brake fluid loss and contamination.
5. Remove the wheel cylinder screw and the wheel cylinder.
6. Remove the park brake cable.
7. Remove the hub-to-knuckle nuts, the hub, and the backing plate from the knuckle.
Installation Procedure
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Important: Use new nuts. Torque retention of old nuts may not be sufficient.
1. Position the hub assembly and the backing plate to the knuckle and tighten using new nuts.
Tighten
Tighten the rear hub assembly-to-knuckle nuts to 50 Nm (37 lb ft) + 30-45 degrees.
2. Install the parking brake cable.
3. Install the wheel cylinder and the fastener.
Tighten
Tighten the wheel cylinder-to-backing plate bolt to 9 Nm (80 lb in).
4. Install the brake pipe onto the wheel cylinder.
Tighten
Tighten the brake pipe-to-rear wheel cylinder to 16 Nm (12 lb ft).
5. Completely assemble the rear drum brakes. Refer to: Brake Drum Replacement
6. Position the wheel and the tire assembly onto the hub.
7. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
8. Lower the vehicle from the hoist.
9. Bleed the brakes. Refer to: Service and Repair
