50. Direct/Coast Clutch, Reaction Carrier Disassemble
DIRECT/COAST CLUTCH, REACTION CARRIER DISASSEMBLE1. Remove thrust bearing and selective thrust washer from input shaft of direct and coast clutch assembly.
2. Remove input sun gear-to-input sun gear shaft snap ring.
3. Remove input sun gear from input sun gear shaft.
4. Remove thrust bearing from reaction carrier assembly.
5. Remove reaction carrier assembly. A thrust bearing is permanently installed in reaction carrier assembly under pinion gears.
6. Remove reaction sun gear and shell assembly.
7. Remove thrust bearing from reaction carrier shaft and shell assembly.
8. Remove reaction carrier she* and shell assembly.
9. Remove thrust bearing from top of spray race assembly.
10. Remove spray clutch retaining snap ring.
11. Remove direct clutch plates from direct coast clutch input housing. The direct clutch consists of a backing plate, steel plates and fiber plates.
12. Lift up on input sun shaft in order to remove input sun shaft and spray as an assembly.
13. Remove inner race-to-input housing thrust bearing if inner race-to-input housing thrust bearing did not remain with input sun shaft and spray assembly.
14. Remove coast clutch plates from input housing. Coast clutch consists of steel plates and fiber plates.
15. Compress direct clutch return spring assembly. Use Clutch Spring Compressor Adapter J41232, and Clutch Spring Compressor J23327.
16. Remove spring retaining snap ring.
17. Remove J41232, and J23327.
18. Remove direct clutch return spring.
19. Remove direct clutch piston and seal assembly.
20. Compress coast clutch return spring. Use Coast Clutch Return Spring Compressor Adapter J41236, and J23327.
21. Remove spring retaining snap ring.
22. Remove J41236 and J23327.
23. Remove coast clutch return spring retainer and release spring.
24. Remove coast clutch piston and seal assembly.
25. Remove and discard Teflon seals from input shaft assembly.
26. Remove input spray assembly from input sun gear shaft.
27. Remove snap ring from spray assembly.
28. Remove spray clutch assembly from spray outer race.
29. Remove two end bearings from spray clutch assembly.
IMPORTANT: The pistons are reusable if not damaged. If pistons or seals are damaged, replace assembly.
30. Inspect piston and seal assemblies for damage or cut seals.
31. Inspect clutch spring assemblies for distortion or missing springs.
32. Inspect direct clutch and coast clutch exhaust checkballs for leaks or damage.
33. Inspect oil passages for blockage.
34. Inspect bushings and bearings for excessive wear.
35. Inspect seal grooves on input shaft for nicks or damage.
36. Inspect splines, housings and clutch plates for cracks, excessive wear or damage.
37. Inspect all other components for damage or excessive wear.
