Tie Rod: Service and Repair

INNER TIE ROD

^ TOOLS REQUIRED
- SA9209C Inner Tie Rod Wrench

REMOVAL

CAUTION: MAKE SURE VEHICLE IS PROPERLY SUPPORTED AND SQUARELY POSITIONED ON THE HOIST. TO HELP AVOID PERSONAL INJURY WHEN A VEHICLE IS ON A HOIST, PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE ON THE OPPOSITE END FROM WHICH COMPONENTS ARE BEING REMOVED.





1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove wheel and tire assemblies.
3. Loosen outer tie rod-to-inner tie rod jam nut.
4. Remove steering gear from vehicle.





5. Remove outer tie rod from inner tie rod.
6. Remove outer tie rod lock nut.
7. Remove steering gear boot.





8. Remove shock damper off inner tie rod by sliding it toward the steering gear.





NOTICE: Steering gear rack must be held stationary during inner tie rod removal to prevent steering gear damage. Use an appropriate size wrench at the rack teeth to hold the rack during inner tie rod removal protect rack teeth with a shop cloth. For right side inner tie rod removal, it will be necessary to remove the left side boot to access the rack teeth.

9. Remove inner tie rod assembly from steering gear.

INSTALLATION





1. Remove old Loctite from threads of rack and inner tie rod.

IMPORTANT: Threads must be clean prior to threadlocker application. Make sure threadlocker container expiration date has not passed. Do not use too much threadlocker. Use only enough to evenly coat threads.

2. Apply Loctite 262(r) (or equivalent) to inner tie rod threads.
3. If shock damper was removed, slide it onto steering gear.





NOTICE: Steering gear must be held stationary during inner tie rod installation to prevent steering gear damage.

4. Using Inner Tie Rod Wrench SA9209C (or equivalent), install inner tie rod assembly onto steering gear.
^ Inner Tie Rod-to-Steering Gear: 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.)





5. Slide shock damper up against inner tie rod assembly.
6. Install steering gear boot onto steering gear.
7. Thread inner tie rod-to-outer tie rod jam nut onto inner tie rod.
8. Thread outer tie rod onto inner tie rod.
9. Install steering gear.

NOTICE: Before installing wheels, remove rust or corrosion from wheel mounting surfaces and brake rotors. Failure to do so can cause wheel bolts to loosen in service.

10. Position wheel onto hub.
11. Install wheel bolts and tighten in a crisscross pattern.
11.1. Hand tighten all five wheel bolts.
11.2. Use a torque wrench to tighten wheel bolts using a crisscross pattern.
^ Wheel Bolts (Initial Torque): 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.)
11.3. Use a torque wrench to final tighten wheel bolts using a crisscross pattern.
^ Wheel Bolts (Final Torque): 125 Nm (92 ft. lbs.)
12. Set toe.
13. Lower vehicle from hoist.
