Service Engine Soon (SES) Light On, Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Stuck On, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0742 (Replace TCC Solenoid)

Models Affected:
2003 L-Series with Automatic Transaxle (RPOS MN4, MN5) and Transaxle Julian Date Code ranging from 2 219 to 3 048

Attention: Technician

Condition:

Some customers may comment that the Service Engine Soon (SES) light may be on and/or vehicle may be sluggish. DTC P0742 may be set.

Cause:

This condition may be caused by a fluid leak around the TCC solenoid.

Correction:

To correct this condition, replace the TCC solenoid.

Procedure:

1. Use the Tech2(R) to verify whether DTC P0742 is either active or in history.





2. Verify that the build date is within the julian date range 2 219 and 3 048.

3. Follow the Trouble Tree in this bulletin.

4. If the Trouble Tree indicates an intermittent concern or a faulty TCC Solenoid, use the appropriate Service Manual procedure and replace the TCC Solenoid.

5. If the Trouble Tree indicates another concern, correct that concern using the 2003 Saturn L-Series Service Manual, clear codes, and re-evaluate before performing further repairs.

6. Test drive vehicle after repairs to verify proper transaxle operation and SES light is not on.
