Intermittent Operation of Tailgate Release Button
(Replace Switch Lever and Compression Spring Washer)
Models Affected:
2003 LW200 and LW300 Saturn Vehicles
Condition:
Some customers may comment on intermittent operation of the tailgate release button when opening the tailgate from outside the vehicle.
Cause:
This condition may be caused by intermittent contact between the switch lever and micro switch housed within the tailgate lock cylinder assembly.
Correction:
Replace the switch lever and the compression spring washer.
Service Procedure:
Liftgate Lock Assembly-Wagon
Removal
1. Remove liftgate trim panel. Refer to Liftgate Trim Panel-Wagon Removal procedure in the 2002-2003 L-Series Body Removal & Installation Service Manual.
2. Disconnect electrical connector from lock assembly.
3. Remove liftgate lock assembly retaining nuts.
4. Disconnect latch cable from lock cylinder assembly. Remove cylinder assembly.
5. Remove E-clip at rear of lock cylinder and remove pawl.
6. Remove switch lever and return spring.
7. Compress snap ring and remove.
8. Remove washer plate.
9. Install new washer plate, P/N 22712713.
10. Install snap ring.
11. Install new switch lever, P/N 22712712, into lock cylinder housing.
12. Place one leg of the return spring into the slot between the switch lever and the plastic housing.
13. Align the pawl so the top leg of the return spring slides into the slot on the pawl.
14. Rotate the pawl counter clockwise in the lock cylinder housing.
Important:
If done properly, the keyway in the pawl will slide down over the key on top of lock cylinder
15. Install the e-clip at the rear of the lock cylinder.
16. Reconnect latch cable to lock cylinder.
Notice:
Be sure lock cylinder button is centered in the opening of the liftgate handle. If the button is not centered in the opening, it can cause a binding condition of the button.
17. Position lock cylinder in liftgate and install retaining nuts.
Torque
Lock Cylinder Nuts: 3.0 N.m (27 in-lbs)
18. Reconnect electrical connector and check button for proper operation.
19. Install liftgate trim panel. Refer to Liftgate Trim Panel-Wagon" installation" procedures in the 2002-2003 L-Series Body Removal & Installation Service Manual.
