Drivetrain - Vibration/Growling Noise on Left Hand Turns

Vibration and/or Grind/Growl Noise from Front End of Vehicle During Left Hand Turns (Adjust Rear Transaxle Mount)

Models Affected:
2003-2004 Saturn ION Vehicles

Attention: Technician

Condition:

Some customers may comment on a vibration and/or a grind/growl noise from the front of the vehicle on left hand turns.

Cause:

The rear transaxle mount may be turned out of position and contacting the rear transaxle mount bracket.

Correction:

Using the procedure in this bulletin, adjust the rear transaxle mount.

Procedure:

1. Verify concern using Chassis Ears Tool SA9217NE, or equivalent.

2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to "Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle" in the General Information section of the appropriate Saturn ION Service Manual.





3. Inspect rear transaxle mount position in rear transaxle mount bracket.

4. If rear transaxle mount is not centered in the rear transaxle mount bracket, the rear transaxle mount must be adjusted. Proceed to Step 6.

5. If transaxle mount is properly positioned, use Chassis Ears Tool SA92I7NE, or equivalent, to pinpoint the source of the concern.

6. If the transaxle mount is not properly positioned, loosen the rear transaxle mount to frame bolts but do not remove them.





7. Move rear transaxle mount to center it within the rear transaxle mount bracket.

8. Tighten the rear transaxle mount to frame bolts.

Tighten

Tighten the frame bolts to 60 N.m (44 ft-lbs).

9. Lower the vehicle.

10. Verify the repair.
