Lighting - Turn Signal Indicator Flashes Too Fast: Overview

File in Section: 08 - Body and Accessories

Bulletin No.: 04-08-42-002

Issue Date: February, 2004

Subject:
Turn Signal Indicator Flashing Faster than Normal and Corresponding Front
Turn Signal Bulb Inoperative (Install Harness Kit)

Models Affected:
2003-2004 Saturn ION Sedans
Refer to "Vehicle Inspection Procedure" Below for VIN Breakpoint Information

Attention: Fixed Operations Manager and Technician

Condition:
Some customers may comment that the turn signal indicator on the instrument panel is flashing more rapidly than normal. They may also comment that the corresponding front turn signal bulb does not work.

Cause:
The amount of voltage supplied to the front headlamp assembly for the turn signal circuit may cause the bulb to prematurely wear out.

Correction:
Turn ignition OFF, then to RUN.

^ If turn signal indicator returns to normal operation, refer to Bulletin 03-08-42-009.

^ If turn signal indicator does not return to normal operation, proceed to vehicle inspection procedure.

On 2004 model year vehicles, perform vehicle inspection procedure to determine if new design main body wiring harness with added resistance is already installed.

^ For 2004 vehicles with new design main body wiring harness, do NOT perform service procedure. Replace park/turn signal bulb and perform diagnostic check,

^ For 2004 vehicles without new design main body wiring harness, follow the service procedure in this bulletin to install a jumper harness.

ON all 2003 model year vehicles, follow the service procedure in this bulletin to install a jumper harness. The jumper harness includes a resistor for each headlamp harness (two per vehicle). The resistor will reduce the voltage applied to the turn signal bulb, which will allow the bulb to run at a lower temperature. The lower operating temperature will increase the life of the bulb.

Vehicle Inspection Procedure:

Important:
Before performing vehicle inspection procedure, turn ignition OFF, then to RUN.

^ If turn signal indicator returns to normal operation, refer to Bulletin 03-08-42-009.

^ If turn signal indicator does not return to normal operation, perform vehicle inspection procedure.

Important:
Some vehicles produced after VIN 4Z161000 already have resistance added to the main body wiring harness during production. These vehicles do NOT need to have the two resistors and jumper harnesses added to the vehicle. Perform the following vehicle inspection procedure to determine if the vehicle already has resistance added to the turn signal circuit.

1. Open trunk lid.

2. Pull back passenger side rear wheelhouse carpet trim.

Important:
The following vehicles have the resistance already added to the vehicle but do not have the pink tape on the tail lamp harness: 4Z160445, 4Z160447, 4Z160452, 4Z160455, 4Z160458, 4Z160461, 4Z160463, 4Z160468, 4Z160472, 4Z160473, 4Z160474, 4Z160477, 4Z160482, 4Z160484, 4Z160485.

3. Look for PINK tape on the tail lamp harness (see illustration). Tape may vary in length between 30 mm and 100 mm (1.125 in to 4 in).

If pink tape is present, do NOT perform Service Procedure. Replace park/turn signal bulb (refer to "Park/Turn Signal Lamp Bulb Replacement" in the Body section of the 2004 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 3) and perform diagnostic check (refer to "Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) Inoperative" diagnostic in the Body section of the 2004 Saturn ION Service Manual, Vol. 3).

If pink tape is not present, then proceed to Service Procedure.
