THE CANADIAN VERSION OF THIS OBD SYSTEM SOFTWARE UPGRADE FOLLOWS THE U.S. VERSION

Purpose

This bulletin provides information about installing a new powertrain control module (PCM) calibration on certain 2004 Saturn ION Red Line vehicles. The revised calibration provides enhancements to the oxygen sensor response diagnostic. Install the new calibration on all affected vehicles identified in this bulletin, including new vehicles in retail inventory and any vehicles that return for service during the applicable 8-year 80,000 mile (130,000 km) emission controller warranty coverage period. Refer to the procedure included in this bulletin.

Service Procedure

Reprogramming PCM

1. Check vehicle history to see if labor code Y0030 is present.

- If Y0030 is present, reprogramming has already been performed. No further service is required.

- If Y0030 is not present, proceed to next step to reprogram PCM.

3. Important: Before installing new PCM calibration, make sure the Saturn Service Stall (SSS) version is TIS 1.0 2005 or later.

4. Important: While ignition is OFF, apply parking brake to disable daytime running lights (DRLs) prior to starting reprogramming procedures.

5. Important: Technician must select "Replace and Reprogram" option in order to reprogram the PCM.

6. Reprogram the PCM with the appropriate calibration listed in this bulletin. Refer to the "Calibration Information" table to select the correct calibration for the vehicle being serviced. (If newer calibrations than those listed in the "Calibration Information" table are available, install the latest available service calibration.) Use the Saturn Service Stall System (SSS) software version 1.0 2005 or later data CD. Refer to "Service Programming System" (SPS) in the SSS User Guide and "Service Programming System (SPS)" in the Vehicle Control Systems section of the 2005 Saturn ION Service Manual for reprogramming procedures.
