Turn Signals: Description and Operation

TURN SIGNAL LAMPS

The HAZARD fuse in the Underhood Fuse block supplies battery positive voltage to the flasher module, which is part of the hazard switch assembly. The BACKUP/TURN fuse in the Underhood Fuse block supplies ignition positive voltage to the flasher module. The turn signal lamps may only be activated with the ignition switch in the ON position. When the turn signal switch is placed in either the left or right position, current flow is from the flasher module's output to the turn signal switch assembly. The flasher module then sends an ON-OFF voltage signal to either the left or right turn signals and their instrument panel cluster (IPC) indicator. When the hazard switch is pressed, all the turn signal lamps will flash including both IPC turn signal indicators.

LEFT TURN SIGNAL

The left turn signal lamp is switched to power by the left turn signal switch. When the switch is in the Left Turn position, current flows though the indicator lamp which is connected to ground within the cluster. This indicates to the operator of the vehicle that the left turn signal is operating. If both the left and right turn signal indicator lamps are flashing, the hazard flashers are ON.

RIGHT TURN SIGNAL

The right turn signal lamp is switched to power by the right turn signal switch. When the switch is in the Right Turn position, current flows though the indicator lamp which is connected to ground within the cluster. This indicates to the operator of the vehicle that the right turn signal is operating. If both the right and left turn signal indicator lamps are flashing, the hazard flashers are ON.
