Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Pressure)
Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding (Pressure)Tools Required
^ J43915 Brake Bleed Adapter
^ J29532 Pressure Bleeder
Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Caution in Service Precautions.
Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Caution in Service Precautions.
Notice: Pressure bleeding equipment must be of the diaphragm type. It must have a rubber diaphragm between the air supply and the brake fluid to prevent air, moisture, and other contaminants from entering the hydraulic system.
1. Clean the brake fluid reservoir cap and the area around cap.
2. Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap.
3. Fill the master cylinder reservoir with clean DOT 3 brake fluid.
4. Install the J43915, or equivalent, to the brake fluid reservoir.
5. Connect the J29532 to the adapter.
6. Pressurize the bleeder equipment to 138 - 172 kPa (20 - 25 psi).
7. If the master cylinder is suspected of having air in its bore, it must be bled before proceeding to brake line bleeding.
8. Loosen the front brake pipe at the master cylinder.
9. Allow brake fluid to flow from front master cylinder port until all the air is removed from the front master cylinder bore.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
10. Tighten the front brake pipe into the master cylinder.
Tighten the brake pipe-to-master cylinder nuts to 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.).
11. Loosen the rear brake pipe, rear port at master cylinder.
12. Allow brake fluid to flow from rear master cylinder port until all the air is removed from the rear master cylinder bore.
13. Tighten the front brake pipe into master cylinder.
Tighten the brake pipe-to-master cylinder nuts to 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.).
Important: To assist in freeing trapped air, tap lightly on caliper casting with a rubber mallet.
14. Bleed the individual calipers and wheel cylinders.
14.1. Place the wrench over bleeder screw.
14.2. Attach a transparent hose over the bleeder screw nipple. Submerge other end of hose in a transparent container of brake fluid.
14.3. Loosen the bleeder screw, allow the fluid to flow into the container until all the air is removed.
14.4. Tighten the bleeder screw.
Tighten the front caliper bleeder valves to 8 Nm (71 inch lbs.).
15. If more than 1 brake pipe is being bled, bleed in the following sequence:
15.1. Right rear
15.2. Left front
15.3. Left rear
15.4. Right front
16. Check the brake pedal, feel for sponginess. If brake pedal exhibits this feel, repeat the bleeding procedure until the condition disappears.
17. When the bleeding procedure is completed on each wheel, check the reservoir fluid level. Fill as necessary.
18. Check for leaks with the engine running and the brakes applied.
