Steering Wheel Module Replacement

INFLATABLE RESTRAINT STEERING WHEEL MODULE REPLACEMENT

TOOLS REQUIRED
J 44298 Driver Air Bag Removal Tool

CAUTION:
- Refer to SRS Sodium Hydroxide Powder Caution in Service Precautions.
- Refer to SIR Inflator Module Handling and Storage Caution in Service Precautions.

IMPORTANT:
In the event deployment has occurred, refer to Repairs and Inspections Required After a Collision.

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

CAUTION: Refer to SIR Caution in Service Precautions.

1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3.
2. Remove the upper steering column trim cover.
3. Turn the steering wheel to the 3 o'clock position.




4. Adjust and install J 44298 into the 2 openings on the back side of the steering wheel.
5. Pull the handle toward the steering wheel. Release the 2 spring-loaded fasteners.
6. Turn the steering wheel. Repeat the same steps for the remaining 2 openings.
7. Disconnect the wiring and remove the bag.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




1. Connect the wiring to the air bag.
2. Align the air bag studs with holes in the steering wheel and press into position.
3. Install the upper steering column trim cover.

IMPORTANT: Press each corner of the air bag until all spring retainers snap into position.

4. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Zone 3.
