Correction
CorrectionNote
The original Elesys Passenger Presence System (PPS) is no longer available and is being replaced by an IEE PPS.
If SI diagnostics leads to replacement of the PPS, the seat wiring harness will need to be revised. Follow the steps below for PPS replacement and seat wiring harness revisions.
1. Verify that DTC B0081 is set in the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM).
2. Using a scan tool, identify which system you have on the vehicle. For 2006 MY, follow tool screen path: Data Display, SIR, System Configuration, PPS Supplier. For 2007 MY, follow tool screen path: SIR, Data Display, System Configuration, PPS Supplier.
1. If the PPS supplier identified is Elesys, perform the Passenger Presence System Flash Code Procedure as outlined in SI to determine PPS DTCs. Follow the PPS DTC SI instructions. If the resolution is to replace the PPS, continue to step 3. If the resolution is not to replace the PPS, disregard this bulletin and continue to follow SI instructions.
2. If the PPS supplier identified is IEE, perform the Passenger Presence System Displaying Code Procedure on the scan tool. Follow the PPS DTC SI instructions. If the resolution is to replace the PPS, refer to Inflatable Restraint Passenger Presence System Replacement - Front (IEE System) in SI. If diagnosis is not to replace the PPS, disregard this bulletin and continue to follow SI instructions.
3. Remove the Inflatable Restraint Passenger Presence Module from the seat frame. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Passenger Presence System Replacement - Front (Elesys System with Heated Seat) or Inflatable Restraint Passenger Presence System Replacement - Front (Elesys System without Heated Seat) in SI.
4. Install the new Passenger Presence System Kit, which includes the seat cushion pad, PPS mat and PPS module. Pass the PPS harness through the seat frame as shown above.
Note
If the original seat included an attached seat cushion heater, you will need to order a new seat cushion heater and replace separately from the PPS kit. Refer to Driver or Passenger Seat Cushion Heater Replacement (IEE System) in SI.
5. Use the following procedures for revising the seat wiring harness:
1. Identify Inflatable restraint PPS module connector C1 (1). Refer to SIR Schematics in SI. On the seat harness, remove the tape 127 mm (5 in) from the seat harness connector (2).
Note
Use a seam riper to help remove the tape.
2. From the seat harness connector C1, identify the wire in cavity 1 (Red/White - battery) and the wire in cavity 10 (Black - heat detection). These circuits are not required with the replacement PPS module. Cut both of these wires from the connector.
3. Seal off both wires (1) using splice sleeves. On the open end of the splice sleeve, crimp the barrel and seal both ends by following the heating procedures. Refer to Splicing Copper Wire Using Splice Sleeves in SI.
4. Cut the remaining wires on the seat harness as close to the back of the connector as possible. The extra length of wire will be required to accommodate the new seat wiring harness routing.
5. Assemble the pigtail kit by first attaching the clip (1).
6. Temporarily insert the pigtail connector/clip into the seat frame (1). Do not insert completely.
7. Attach the pigtail kit to the seat harness using the splice sleeves in the kit. Refer to Splicing Copper Wire Using Splice Sleeves in SI. When attaching the pigtail kit to the harness, the splice sleeves should be staggered (1) to reduce the bundle size. Gage size of the wires may vary between the pigtail kit and the seat harness. To increase the width, cut the length to 10 mm (0.39 in) and fold over. The correct width can be determined by matching the bare wire to the crimp tool.
8. The pigtail kit will contain wires in cavities A to E with cavity F being empty. Splice the pigtail kit to the seat harness using the following sequence. Refer to SIR Connector End Views in SI for addition information:
- Splice wire A to Pink wire (Ignition 1 Voltage, circuit 1139)
- Splice wire B to Pink & Black wire (Occupant Sensor - serial Data, circuit 5018)
- Splice wire C to Dark Blue wire (Passenger Air Bag On Indicator Control, circuit 2307)
- Splice wire D to Black wire (Ground, circuit 1851)
- Splice wire E to Dark Green wire (Passenger Air Bag Off Indicator Control, circuit 2308)
9. After splicing the wires together, tape the harness using anti-abrasion electrical tape. Obtain "*Woven Polyester (PET) Electrical Tape" (Special Order PN RZ97156A00) from Kent Automotive. Refer to Parts Information below. Remove the pigtail connector/clip temporarily installed into the seat frame to ease taping the harness.
Tape the harness starting at the connector using a 50 percent overlap of tape. Tape along the harness, over the splice connections and over the harness conduit. Tape back over the harness to the connector creating a double layer of tape.
Important
DO NOT substitute with vinyl electrical tape or friction tape. Use only the tape specified above.
10. Connect the seat harness connector to the PPS connector (1). Insert the connector/clip to the seat frame.
11. Secure the new harness to the seat frame using tie straps at the locations shown above (1).
6. Connect the seat cushion heater connector (1) to the heated seat control module. Secure the heated seat harness to the adjacent harness using a tie strap as shown above (2).
7. Identify the center cross car hog ring tie down (1) on the seat cushion cover. Using side cutters, cut of 17 mm (0.669 in) - 20 mm (0.788 in) from each end of the hog ring tie down as shown above (2).
8. Re-assemble the seat. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Passenger Presence System Replacement - Front (IEE System) in SI.
9. Perform the Passenger Presence System Preload Test (PPS Setup). Refer to Passenger Presence System Preload Test (PPS Setup) in SI.
