Steering Column Lock and Ignition Switch Cylinder Replacement

Removal Procedure


Important: The airbag unit must not be forcibly opened and must always be positioned with the upholstered side up.


1. Remove the airbag unit. Refer toInflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement (Service and Repair) .
2. Connect the battery and switch on the ignition.
3. Lock the steering.

* Turn the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.

Important: Switch off the ignition. Open and close the driver door. The steering lock and ignition lock engage automatically.


* Allow the steering lock to engage.





4. Disconnect the wiring harness plug (1) for the horn.
5. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column.

* Remove the bolt (2).
* Pull the steering wheel from the steering spindle.

Caution: Refer toBattery Disconnect Caution (Battery Disconnect Caution) .

Important: Before disconnecting the battery, the steering wheel lock must be disengaged.


6. Disconnect the battery.

* Disengage the steering wheel lock by briefly pressing the Start/Stop button.

Important: Keep the driver door open and the key in the vehicle.


* Disconnect the battery negative cable.





7. Remove the lower steering column paneling.

* Remove the 5 bolts (arrows).
* Remove the ignition lock rosette (1).

8. Remove the upper steering column paneling.
Remove the paneling from instrument assembly.




9. Remove the column integration module (CIM).

* Remove the 3 bolts (1).
* Disconnect the wiring harness holder (arrow).
* Release the wiring harness plug (2) and disconnect.





10. Remove the steering and ignition lock.

* Remove the ground connection.
* Remove the bolt (1).
* Remove the bolt (2).
* Disconnect the clip (3).





11. Remove the Open and Start receiver.
Release and remove the retaining lug (1).



Installation Procedure

1. Install the Open and Start receiver.
Insert and engage.

Notice: Refer toFastener Notice (Fastener Notice) .

2. Install the steering and ignition cylinder.

* Connect the negative connection.

Tighten the bolt to 5 N.m (44 lb in).


Important: Install the CIM and align horizontally.


* Install the bolt.

Tighten the bolt 15 N.m (11 lb ft).

* Install the clip.

3. Install the CIM.

* Connect the wiring harness plug.
* Connect the wiring harness holder.

Tighten the 3 bolts 15 N.m (11 lb ft).


4. Install the lower steering column paneling.

Tighten the 3 bolts 1 N.m (9 lb in).






Important: The airbag contact unit must not be twisted.



Important: When removing and installing, ensure that the markings (arrows) are opposite each other.


5. Insert the steering wheel in the CIM.
The guide pin (1) on the back of the steering wheel must engage in the carrier (2) on the CIM.





Important: Connect the battery. Switch ignition on and off. Open and close driver door. The steering lock and ignition lock engage automatically.


6. Install the steering wheel to the steering spindle.


Important: Ensure the markings (2) on the steering wheel align with those on the steering spindle.



Important: Guide the airbag wiring harness (1) through the opening in the steering wheel hub.


* Place the steering wheel on the steering column.

Important: Clean the thread and install the new bolt using locking compound.


* Tighten the new bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).


7. Connect the wiring harness plug for the horn.
8. Connect the battery.
9. Install the airbag unit. Refer toInflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement (Service and Repair) .
