Steering Wheel Replacement

Removal Procedure


Important:
* Before installation work affecting the airbag, follow the safety instructions for the pyrotechnic systems.

* The airbag unit must not be forced open and must always be laid with the cushion side facing upwards.



1. Remove the steering wheel airbag module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement (Service and Repair) .
2. Connect the battery and switch on the ignition for vehicles with Open and Start.

Important:
* Disregard for vehicles with Open and Start.

* Switch off the ignition for vehicles with Open and Start. Open and close the driver door. The steering lock and ignition lock engage automatically.



3. Lock the steering.

* Turn the steering into the straight-ahead position.
* Remove the ignition key.
* Allow the steering lock to engage.

4. Disconnect the wiring harness plug (1) for the horn.




5. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column.

* Remove the bolt (2).
* Remove the steering wheel from the steering shaft.




Installation Procedure






Important:
* During removal and installation, make sure that the markings (arrows) are in the positions illustrated.

* The airbag contact unit must not be twisted.



1. Insert the steering wheel in the column integration module (CIM). The guide pin (1) on the back of the steering wheel must engage in the carrier (2) of the CIM.




2. Guide the airbag (1) wiring harness through the opening in the steering wheel hub.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice (Fastener Notice) .


Important:
* Ensure that the marks (2) on the steering wheel and steering shaft align.

* Clean the thread and install a new bolt with locking compound.



3. Install the steering wheel to the steering shaft.
Position the steering wheel on the steering column.

Tighten the bolt to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).

4. Connect the wiring harness plug for the horn/infotainment.
5. Install the steering wheel airbag module. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Replacement (Service and Repair) .
6. Connect the negative cable battery.
