Subject:
Engine Cranks with No Start or Engine has Extended Crank Before Starting (Use Recommended Engine Oil and Install Engine Oil Heater, If Not Equipped)
Models:
2008 Saturn ASTRA
Condition
Some customers may comment on a no start or an extended crank before start. This condition typically occurs only when ambient temperatures fall below -25F (-32C)
Correction
If a customer is in area of extreme cold, where the temperature falls below -25F (-32C), it is recommended that they use an engine oil with an SAE viscosity grade of 0W-30 and install an engine oil heater (standard on vehicles sold in Canada). This will provide easier cold starting and better protection for the engine at extremely low temperatures. For additional oil requirements, refer to Vehicle Service and Care in the vehicle's Owners Manual.
Important:
Please inform the customer that the engine oil heater should be plugged in a minimum of three hours prior to starting the vehicle.
Using the parts listed below, follow this procedure to install the engine oil heater.
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Replace the RH lower radiator grille with a new one that has the provision for oil pan heater power cord.
3. Pass the power cord through the lower radiator grille and snap in place.
4. Loosely install the heater bracket to the engine block using provided bolt.
5. Clean the oil pan surface and wipe dry with a clean lint-free towel prior to installing the heater.
6. Apply the provided paste to the backside of the heater. Evenly coat the entire surface.
7. Install the heater to the oil pan and retain using the bracket.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 40 N.m (30 lb ft).
8. Route the power cord over the sub-frame (cradle) and over to the heater. Connect the power cord to the heater.
9. Install the safety lock onto the heater connection. Snap the heat shield onto the connection and secure using tie straps.
10. Secure the 3 harness clips to the studs located on the cradle.
11. Route the ground wire up along existing wiring harness.
12. Lower the vehicle.
13. Remove the air cleaner inlet tube to access ground terminal.
14. Remove the terminal nut and install the heater ground wire onto stud. Reinstall the nut.
15. Secure the heater ground wire to the existing wiring harness using tie strap.
16. Reinstall the air cleaner inlet tube.
