Subject: Screech/Squeal Noise When Opening or Closing Sunroof (Apply Squeak Reduction Tape to Sunroof Window Brackets)

Models:
2008-2009 Saturn Astra
with Sunroof (RPO C3U)

Condition

Some customers may comment on hearing a screeching or squealing noise when opening or closing the sunroof. This condition occurs most often when the sunroof seals are moistened by rain, dew or a car wash.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the interaction of the sunroof window mounting brackets with the flocked inner surface of the sunroof outer perimeter seal.

Correction

Tip
Confirm this condition by lightly touching the outer seal while cycling the sunroof open/closed, feeling for vibrations within the seal.

Important
When this condition is found, DO NOT lubricate the sunroof assembly or replace the sunroof seal and/or frame (housing).

Apply squeak reduction tape to the outside surface of the right and left sunroof window brackets following the steps below:

1. Remove the front sunroof window. Refer to Sunroof Window Replacement - Front in SI.

2. Partially cycle the sunroof so the window brackets (1) are in the highest, level position in relation to the outer perimeter seal, as shown above. Ensure that the window brackets are clean and free of any dirt/debris.

Tip
The metal ruler/tool should be at least the length of the window bracket. If unavailable, two rulers/tools of the length shown above (placed end to end) could be used.
3. Insert a metal ruler (1), or equivalent tool, between the sunroof seal (2) and the window bracket (3). This will enable you to pull the seal outboard and away from the bracket when applying the tape.
4. Cut two pieces of the squeak reduction tape (P/N 89027387) 470 mm (18.5 in) in length.

Important
To maximize the coverage against the seal, position the tape as low as possible on the window brackets.

5. With the tape's adhesive side backing still attached, pull the ruler/tool (1) outboard and position the tape (2) along the outside surface of the window bracket. Leave enough overlap to enable wrapping the tape over each end of the bracket.

6. Starting from one end, peel the tape backing (1) and press the tape onto the window bracket. While working along the length of the bracket, ensure that the tape stays positioned as low as possible.

7. Finish securing the tape by wrapping both ends around the bracket.
8. Repeat Steps 5 through 7 on the opposite side.
9. Reinstall the front sunroof window. Refer to Sunroof Window Replacement - Front in SI.
