08335 -- Service Update for Inventory and Customer Vehicles -- On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Improvements - Reprogram Engine and Transmission Control Modules - Expires with 8 year/80,000 mile (130,000 km) Emission Controller Warranty
Models:
2008 Saturn Astra
Equipped with 1.8L 4-Cylinder (RPO 2H0) Engine and AF17-4 (RPO MNF) Transmission
THIS SERVICE UPDATE INCLUDES VEHICLES IN RETAILER INVENTORY AND CUSTOMER VEHICLES THAT RETURN TO THE RETAILER FOR ANY REASON. IT WILL EXPIRE AT THE END OF THE INVOLVED VEHICLE'S 8 YEAR/80,000 MILE (130,000 KM) NEW VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROLLER WARRANTY PERIOD.
Purpose
This bulletin provides a service procedure to reprogram the Engine Control Module (ECM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) on certain 2008 model year Saturn Astra vehicles, equipped with a 1.8L 4-cylinder (RPO 2H0) engine and AF17-4 (RPO MNF) transmission. The OBD system update contains improvements to ECM diagnostics and the TCM 'distance since codes cleared' calculation. To verify if an updated calibration is required, refer to the following procedure in this bulletin.
This service procedure should be completed as soon as possible on involved vehicles currently in retailer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the retailer for any type of service during the 8 year / 80,000 mile (130,000 km) emission controller warranty coverage period.
Vehicles Involved
A list of involved vehicles currently in retailer inventory is available on the "Service Update Bulletin Information" link under the "Service" tab in GM GlobalConnect (Saturn US), or attached to the Dealer Communication (Canada), used to release this bulletin. Customer vehicles that return for service, for any reason, and are still covered under the vehicle's 8 year / 80,000 mile (130,000 km) emission controller warranty coverage period, and are within the VIN breakpoints shown above, should be checked for vehicle eligibility in the appropriate system listed below.
Important:
Retailers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using the system(s) below. Not all vehicles within the above breakpoints may be involved. If the system indicates that Service Update Bulletin 08335 remains "open" and ECM/TCM reprogramming has not taken place since 12/05/08, reprogram the ECM/TCM with the calibration update from TIS 2 Web.
- Canadian Saturn retailers should use GMVIS.
- Saturn US retailers should use the 'Investigate Vehicle History' link on the Global Warranty Management application within DealerWorld.
Calibration Information
Do not attempt to order the calibration number from GMSPO. The calibration numbers required for this service procedure are programmed into control modules via a Tech 2(R) scan tool and TIS2WEB with the calibration update. Use TIS2WEB on or after 12/05/08 to obtain the calibration. If you cannot access the calibration, call the Techline Customer Support Center and it will be provided.
Parts Information
U.S. Retailers: Parts required to complete this field action are to be obtained from Saturn Service Parts Operations (SSPO). Due to the small number of anticipated transmission control module (TCM) replacements, Saturn did not pre-ship parts for this recall. If the TCM cannot be programmed, please place an order for a replacement part.
Canadian Retailers: Parts required to complete this field action are to be obtained from General Motors Service and Parts Operations (GMSPO). Please refer to your "involved vehicles listing" before ordering parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO=Daily Replenishment Order. In an emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.
Service Procedure
Note:
Successful completion of this field action requires programming both the engine control module (ECM) and transmission control module (TCM). Program the ECM first and then program the TCM. If you are not able to program the TCM after three consecutive programming attempts, replace the TCM. Obtain tire size and TCM part number information before programming the ECM and TCM . Use the Tech 2(R) to obtain the TCM part number information.
Service Programming System (SPS)
For step-by-step programming instructions, please refer to SI and the Techline Information System (TIS) terminal.
1. Verify that there is a battery charge of 12 to 16 volts. The battery must be able to maintain a charge during programming. Only use an approved Midtronic 165-PSC charger or equivalent to maintain proper battery voltage during programming.
2. Reprogram the engine control module (ECM). Refer to SI and Service Programming System (SPS) documentation for programming instructions, if required.
2.1. Connect the Tech 2(R) to the vehicle.
2.2. Select J2534 Tech 2(R) Pass-Thru or Tech 2(R) Legacy Pass-Thru and Reprogram ECU from the Select Diagnostic Tool and Programming Process screen.
2.3. Select ECM Engine Control Module from the Supported Controllers screen.
2.4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
3. Using the Tech 2(R), clear all DTCs if required.
4. Reprogram the transmission control module (TCM).
4.1. Select J2534 Tech 2(R) Pass-Thru or Tech 2(R) Legacy Pass-Thru and Reprogram ECU from the Select Diagnostic Tool and Programming Process screen.
4.2. Select TCM Transmission Control Module from the Supported Controllers screen.
4.3. Follow the on-screen instructions. If reprogramming the TCM is unsuccessful after three attempts, replace the TCM. Refer to Transmission Control Module Replacement in SI.
5. Using the Tech 2(R), clear all DTCs if required.
