Steering Gear Rack Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle (HPS)

1. Hoist the vehicle. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
2. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.




3. Loosen the steering gear rack bearing adjuster plug lock nut (1).
4. Turn the steering gear rack bearing adjuster plug clockwise until it bottoms in the steering gear assembly.
5. Turn the steering gear rack bearing adjuster plug back 50 degrees to 70 degrees (approximately one flat).

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice (Fastener Notice).


Important: Hold the steering gear rack bearing adjuster plug stationary while tightening the steering gear rack bearing adjuster plug lock nut.


6. Install the steering gear rack bearing adjuster plug lock nut (1).

Tighten the nut to 68 N.m (50 lb ft).

7. Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
