Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement
Tools Required
J-42188-B Ball Joint Separator
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the tire and wheel assemblies as needed. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair) .
2. Loosen, do not remove, the steering linkage outer tie rod nut (2) from the steering linkage outer tie rod end (1).
3. Install J-42188-B between the steering knuckle and the steering linkage outer tie rod (1).
4. Tighten the nut on J-42188-B until the steering knuckle and the steering linkage outer tie rod (1) separate.
5. Remove J-42188-B and the steering linkage outer tie rod nut (2).
6. Loosen the steering linkage inner tie rod nut (2) on the steering linkage inner tie rod (1).
7. Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod nut (3) and the steering linkage outer tie rod (5) from the steering knuckle (4).
Important: Count the number of full rotations taken to remove the steering linkage outer tie rod from the steering linkage inner tie rod. This will assist in the installation and toe adjustments.
8. Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod (5) from the steering linkage inner tie rod (1).
Installation Procedure
Important: Install the steering linkage outer tie rod the same number of full rotations counted when removing.
1. Install the steering linkage outer tie rod (5) to the steering linkage inner tie rod (1). Do not tighten the steering linkage inner tie rod nut.
2. Install the steering linkage outer tie rod (5) to the steering knuckle (4).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice (Fastener Notice) .
3. Install the steering linkage outer tie rod nut (3) to the steering linkage outer tie rod (5).
Tighten to 30 N.m (22 lb ft) plus an additional 115 degrees.
4. Tighten the steering linkage inner tie rod nut (2).
5. Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair) .
6. Adjust the wheel toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment (Service and Repair) .
