Condition
Some customers may comment on an illuminated check engine light in cold ambient temperatures. Upon further investigation, a technician may find one of these DTCs set:
- DTC P0116 - Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Performance
This DTC may set early in the drive cycle after a cold start. In some cases, with a short cold drive cycle and the DTC set, on the following restart, the vehicle may not start or have an extended crank before starting. The customer may comment that if the accelerator is held wide open, the vehicle would start.
- DTC P0128 - Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature
This DTC may set early in the drive cycle after a cold start. Operating the HVAC system on high blower with a light drive cycle may increase the probability of this DTC setting.
- DTC P2097 - Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System High Limit
This DTC may set in cooler ambient temperatures with a short trips and a light load drive cycle.
Correction
Review the diagnostic information contained in SI. If no cause for the condition can be found, reprogram the ECM with a new service calibration using the TIS2WEB Service Programming System (SPS) application or the multiple diagnostic interface (MDI). As always, make sure your Tech 2(R)/multiple diagnostic interface (MDI) is updated with the latest software version.
Warranty Information
For vehicles reprogrammed under the 8 year/80,000 mile (130,000 km) emission controller warranty, use the table.
